Has anyone used Megatak Hair Strengthener? It is supposed to be good for preventing manes rubbing away or encouraging manes to regrow if they have been rubbed away. Both my boys' manes are looking a bit sorry for themselves, but at £20 a bottle I want to know it works first. I've tried googling it and all I can find is a lot of forums for black women to discuss hair. Apparently it is very good on their hair if not equine!

It does work (I have been using it on my horses' shoulder) but doesn't work as fast as advertised on their website (I am pretty sure they have somebody who claimed they got a full coat back in 3 days!)
 
It's a very wierd product in the sense it does actually work!!!! No, don't use it to STOP hair falling out, you stop hair falling out in the first place by using a bib or snuggyhood or buying a rug that does not rub.

It's useful to help hair grow back if you haven't done any of the above.

Thankfully, as I am so careful :rolleyes: I've not needed it but I've seen it work it's magic on many many horses.
 
Ta. It's the snuggyhoods that have done the damage with mine, they never had trouble until they started wearing them. They're still worth it for 2 clean greays though ;)

The end of my mare's tail was getting bitty and fragile after I left "Shine in yellow out" on the bottom end a bit long :o. I do think the the mega tek has improved the quality of the hair coming down.

I tried it on her mane for the first time this year but it has still rubbed out :(

I have diligently used my snuggy hood, but this is a problem I have so far failed to solve :confused:

Slight hijack but any suggestions?
 
Hoods and snuugy hoods and lycra neck covers all rub Snip's mane out...this is the first year his mane has survived because I bought a detacheable neck cover and ditched the full neck snuggy hoods and just used one of the face mask ones instead, and took the neck cover off at night.

He's still thinned out a bit because the cover got left on day and night for a few weeks when I first broke my knee and was unable to get to the yard, so was paying someone else to do them for me, and they left hoods on.

Next year it will be face masks and removeable hoods on in the day, and naked necks at night.

Also found that making sure the neck cover lining was a shiny material, not matte cotton is best, and also regular mane and tail spraying (I use pig oil on legs but that seemed to make them mane problem worse)
 
One of mine won't keep a turn out head on and the other might as well not bother wearing it as he still manages to get mud under it, through all the holes and all the way down his neck:rolleyes:. I can cope with losing a bit of mane as they both have them short so they grow back quickly but I just wanted to give them a helping hand or stop it happening if I could.
 
It does work on re growth but it doesn't stop the rubbing in the first place. It also makes your nails grow ... and it makes human hair grow too , I`ve heard its used on patients receiving cancer treatment that have had hair loss as well.

Im on my 2nd bottle and id say its worth the money :)

Sorry to hear that... have you heard of Rambo Wugs?

Also, does he need that much insulation?
 
Yes he does...he has Recurrent Exertional Rhabdomyolysis and one of the main facotrs for him is temperature. Let him get even slightly cold and he ties up.

He's also the worst roller I've ever met and it's beyond managable if you don't cover him up!

I've tried loads of makes of rugs, they all do the same, my newest seem to be the best I've found.

Never had hair loss, but have very fine very long hair. Used it on and off as a water down solution, it's deffo made my hair longer, thicker and much much stronger. Have next to no split ends, and my hair rarely breaks. Makes your nails grow super quick and strong as well!

We used it on the horses too.....coincidentally! Made it stronger and thicker, but didn't encourage growth so much on horses as it appears to with humans! xoxo

I have used this. I have an Andalusian with a mane down to his knees. It can be used neat or I have mixed it in a spray bottle with water and sprayed it on. To be honest, it is expensive and I have found it makes my horses mane feel 'sticky' and 'dirty' and I don't think it made that much difference. I stopped using it a while ago and his mane remains the same as it did before. I wash my horses mane in human shampoo and conditioner, finger comb it and then once it's dry, I put it into long, loose plaits, but I don't pull it tight at the roots and I never use rubber bands on it either. I leave the plaits in until they look really untidy (about a week or so) and then take them out, give it a careful comb through and then put the plaits back in. I am paranoid about his mane being rubbed off, and I have used neck covers before and I have not, to date, had a problem with it being rubbed out. I really believe that manes and tails grow best when the skin and follicles are kept very clean, and you don't use a harsh brush or comb on it. My advice is, give it a good wash with warm water (the grease will not be washed out if you use cold), condition it and leave it alone. You could try and put a running plait in if you use hoods, as this tyoe of plait covers the hair roots, offering it a bit of protection from being rubbed at skin level. Good luck.
