which do you think is the best my stables are concrete floors and the horses are only allowed out for about 2hrs in the winter
what is the best way to manage the bed, semi deep litter or full muck out every day or once a week
how do you know when the wet needs removing?
does it stay clean looking or go brown?
any pictures of your exsisting bed would be welcome
thank you

hiya, i posted about this fairly recently in stable yard - most people said wood pellets. Thats what i'm using. I find the best way is to semi deep litter. I lift out all the droppings and really wet surface stuff, but i try to let the rest form a base. I didn't find it smelly and despite shavings looking nicer i wouldnt go back now. Yes the bed does discolour, but as you top it up you will freshen the colour up

thank you thats great when my boy is on shavings he seems to walk it every where with him would this be the same also he is very wet and i use about 3 shavings bales a week on him but he is in a lot as we only have minimum turnout in the winter

I was going through a lot of shavings too as my boy is so wet! I find the bed quite heavy and as long as you let it bed down a bit and form a base i really didn't find it moved. I was using a good 3 bags of shavings a week and was able to use 1 bag of wood pellets a week. I have a day bed down atm and went 2 1/2 weeks without having to add any bedding

wow that sounds a lot better i keep thinking about putting mats down but i think he would be just too wet on them and would still need a full bed
its all so confusing

I use megazorb with rubber matting, i have a 5 inch thick bed, only muck out when the wee starts rising to the top (every 3 to 4 weeks), the bedding stops the wee soaking through the mats to the floor, always stays clean despite the manic box walking in the mornings and gets topped up every ten days.
