Is it flax/hemp? I use Flaxcore for a base under a straw bed, and semi deep litter (muck out the straw layer) and it works well. My old cushingoid mare is very very wet, works okay for her but now and again I hang a heat lamp over it to dry it out, so that she will have a solid base that doesn't move aside I don' t have rubber mats, my stables don't drain well enough.
I won't be able to get any more Flaxcore though so I'm watching this thread - the alternative is miscanthus which I have just found a local stockist for.
Whoops sorry, looked it up and it is a wood product. I can't dispose of wood products so it is out for me.
I love megazorb.. I used wood pellets last year and much prefer megazorb. My pony is quite tidy but can be wet and I don't mind I have to use much at all. It does move around a bit especially if it's dry so I use it over rubber mats, and yes i'd say good for wet but not messy horses
I have a tidy but wet horse and use Megazorb. Fantastic stuff. I first used it as a complete, full bed on top of rubber mats but as I know where my mare pees, I now use a bag of megazorb in the wet zone and use shavings over the top. The megazorb soaks up the wet - I take very little wet out on a day to day basis - just anything that's made its way to the surface. The megazorb is best left undisturbed - eventually it becomes quite solid and doesn't move. I add more megazorb - probably quarter of a bag - once a week.
Agree with the tidy but wet. It doesn't bank up at the walls very well or make a nice fluffy bed so I used it with large flake shavings to make the banks and megazorb in the middle. Also great in the wagon if you have a horse that like to wee in there.
