Our yard is having a really tough run of it at the moment and we are all getting a bit twitchy about even though there is nothing that coul be done . We have had our fourth horse injured and put to sleep today in the last 6 weeks and its just heartbreaking. We found one of the riding school ponies in the field with a broken leg clean through above the hock an obv put to sleep job, then we have two golden oldies who have both been really well suddenly (as in 6 or 7 hours ) go down hill and obv kindest thing to do is put to sleep and then today we found a new mare who has only been with us about ten days in the field with a completely shattered hock- she was her owners first horse and she hadnt even sat on her yet due to a lack of saddle - its just so heartbreaking sometimes :(
 
Its always the same - everything always has to happen at once!

Hope things start improving for everyone at the yard :(
 
It's a bit odd that two horses in a short space of time have had broken legs in the field. I really think that a possible cause for both should be found & if related sorted out.
 
Whats going on....I would be very concerned...kick/ pot hole/ attacked ??? any reason or cause to broken leg? What was the reason?

So sorry to hear this very sad.
 
Goodness, that is just tragic. RIP poor things.
As the others have said - is there anything that links the two with broken legs? Might be worth having a super careful turnout walk and ensuring everything is as safe as possible. Might just be a terrible accident, but worth having a check to put your mind at rest at least.
 
we cant see any link as such only that it was the same herd of horses involved - in different fields though as they had moved grazing. First pony was a long term resident 10+ years and the herd hadnt had any new arrivals for three/four months or so and yesterdays one was obv a newbie but she had been introduced properly over the fence ,slow intros with the more sensible ponies etc and yesterday was the first day that they had all been in together but had been quite happy up until then - no chasing,hooleying about. Its just so sad but I think the yard owner is going to go to individual turnout :( which I find really sad as the herd turnout as really helped my last three horses that Ihave purchased as they had little or no social skills when they arrived (ex racers) but I understand why it needs to go that way . Obv vet came out to both broken legs - one yesterday was def a kick other one she couldnt say for def as there was only a slight scuff to the coat but she said its possible it could look like that if one with no back sshoes had done it and he was only 11hh so a wee little dot tbh
