I have a 21 year old grey who was diagnosed with a melanoma on his anus 5 years ago. The vet said nothing could be done so we watched it grow from the size of a pea to a grapefruit. He was looking unhappy last week & was struggling to defecate so I thought the end had come. However the next day the melanoma dropped off! It seems like a miracle has anyone heard of this happening before?

Is the vet sure it was a melonoma? It sounds more like a pus sack that has grown and solidified (think hard abscess with no soft spot) then died off. What was the hole like where it was, pics would have been good.

I have heard of a horse that had a large growth on the bony nose bit of its face. It was out hunting one day and started to nod its head up and down and suddenly the growth fell off, leaving a big hole in its face. I don't think the growth came back, nor did the face return to "normal" but the hole healed OK.

Hi the vet was quite sure it was a melanoma in fact I read about alternative medicine & tried cimetedine (tagamet) for a while. I will take photos I did have them whilst it was growing but found it all too depressing & deleted them. I now wish I hadn't. This could be of interest to research.

did they do a needle aspirate of it? having had a horse that had a melanoma, that several vets said it was a sarcoid before having a needle aspirate done-well, they don't always look like they ought. I am glad this one (whatever it is!) has fallen off and that he's more comfortable.

One of my horses who is retired and turned away suffers badly from sarcoids. Not long ago I noticed he wasn't quite his normal self so had the vet out to do some checks and she found a huge apple sized sarcoid in his groin area - it was hanging off so she sedated him and the whole thing came off!

No the vet didn't do a needle aspirate. I was disappointed by the lack of interest we always hope something can be done it's awful when they don't offer any advice. Thank you
