My 24 year old grey pony has had a couple of lumps in his tail for a number of years now. However recently a lot more have come up, he now has approx 10 or 12 and some are quite big. He was holding his tail up this evening and there is one right where his tail starts that is sore. He is fine in himself, eating and not poorly.

I am aware that greys get melanomas and that he is an old boy but is there anything I can do for him to make them more comfortable?

Have you had your vet check him out? My 20 year old pony has loads including one quite large one inside his sheath. But the vet is happy that they are not causing any issues. However they said that if there is one that causes discomfort they would remove it. Good luck. xx

My mare has had melanomas under her tail since I bought her (8 years ago, she's 18 now). I've noticed that some of these are increasing in size but she seems comfortable even when having her bum cleaned; vet says just to keep an eye on them and check for any changes. BUT I read that when these are present, there's a good chance that there could be lumps in the rectum... And removal of any lumps in this area is risky. Hope things go well with your boy and good luck! :)

There is a drug that you can get from the vets, it begins with c but I can't remember the name of it, I did discuss treating those on my horse, but decided to leave it.

My mare had them years under her tail but they never caused her an issue until last summer when the flies bit her so much she caught her bum rubbing on the fence, then one under her tail got torn and we had to apply cream to sooth it. In November she got into a kicking match with my other old mare and one Melonoma burst on impact. The vet treated it and we had to flush it every day for the rest of her life.

Her melonomas didn't cause her any issues unless something else caused it. I'd have the vet check them out ASAP. My mare died in February from a totally unrelated issue but we had to flush her burst Melonoma every day till that point just because we didnt want an infection from poo getting stuck in the healed hole.
