I ave a grey pony, who has always had a small, button sized melanoma under his tail, occasionally weeped but generally nothing at all. We have had him about 8yrs now.
He was out on loan for a year and I checked and there are now two of them, large enough, and one is quite oozy/weepy, black fluid from the black lump.
Im not quite sure now, they are a form of cancer aren't they?
Is the fact another one has sprung up in a year a good/bad sign? Can they be removed? Has anyone else had any melanomas in this area and do they obstuct the passing of droppings or can they cause a problem?
Will obviously get the vet to look next time he's out, but just wanting others experiences?

I would get your vet out to be on the safe side.

I have just discovered what I think are melanomas on my grey and the vet is coming out next week to be on the safe side.

As the article says, it is best to leave the melanomas if possible. Try to keep the flies out of the weeping lumps and keep them clean.

Mony, my grey has quite a collection under her tail, I have never had them weep. My vet won't remove them unless they cause an anal blockage which they don't but are growing slowly. The reason for not removing is they come back and it is a pointless exercise to remove them apparently.

Get the vet to check them out as they are weeping and see what he/she says.

My grey mare is 34, She has had a large melanoma removed from under her tail about 10 yrs ago. It has regrown now as is quite large. A while ago it started leaking that black fluid. My vet told me because of her age they cannot remove it again, but to put Sudocream on it . I wash it in mild solution of salt water,(gently) Wait a while then apply sudo cream. This has stopped it weeping.
I now apply SC 2-3 times a week omly just to be on the safe side.
Do be very gentle when doing this.
