I have a 14 year old ID X grey mare who since I have had her has had numerous melanomas recently the one on her neck has increased in size rapidly which is worrying as i hadn't noticed a great difference until a month ago. Do people think that this could be causing her any pain? I have noticed that her mood will change sometimes but I took that down to her just being a mare. Any help would be very much appreciated

Maybe nothing but if grown rapidly it is worth checking it out with the vet. Many horses live perfectly well with melanomas but always worth checking if the suddenly change.

I looked after a 30 year old horse that had a melanoma in his cheek/jaw that in 6 months grew from a small 'bump' to the size of a small football. He never seemed bothered by it, he did find eating a bit difficult and was very dribbly at the end but we never thought he was in pain as he seemed happy and actually didn't lose much weight considering. I don't think the melanoma actually hurts, its just what structures its attached to/blocking that seem to cause trouble.
