I'm having one removed has anyone had it done. Did it grow back or has anyone else used something else par surgery to get rid of them.
Thanks on advance

My horse has had surgery this week to remove some of his as were near and on his sheath so would have caused an obstruction , he's is still at the vets as bled a lot so will reassess tomoz under sedation.

My pony has huge ones all around her back end bless her but I was told unless they caused her a problem to leave them alone as it would probably cause more problems to remove them, however she did have two very small ones removed from above her eye and they have never come back.

Sorry another question did you have them done on your insurance or did you pay for them yourself I'm debating weather to go though insurance he only has one small one for now which isn't going to cost much or I wait being grey when he gets more in areas that cause a problem then go though insurance for them

Is it in an area that will cause him ongoing problems? If not then don't worry about having it removed. Far better to leave well alone.

Greys are prone to them and some end up with very lumpy docks but they cause no problems at all.

We left ours alone, and they were the reason in the end why we had her pts as one particular one caused her unfortunate problems, but she got to a good age despite having various (stable) ones for years. I wouldn't bother for just one small one tbh, if it's not in the way of tack, there will probably be more to come yet.

Your insurance will not pay for any treatment in the future, if you are thinking of another few years time, so leaving then trying to claim is probably not going to be an option as they will exclude them as a long standing condition, if you don't claim now they will check his history at a later date anyway.

I had a mare with almost all of her normal skin invaded by melanoma around her abuse and vulva. She spent a year on cimetidine which did not halt the tissue destruction. I then paid for the canine melanoma vaccine (first horse in UK to have it). Still no real resolution. Then one of the tumours discharged its contents right under the base of her tail, leaving a large cavernous hole. It was painful for her as her tail was clamped in tight. I had her pts the next day. Until something comes out that can make a marked difference, I would leave well alone.

Greys are prone to them and once they get one more are likely to follow. They are rarely cancerous but can be a problem if they develop under the saddle or bridle area.

they are always cancerous! that is what they are-at some point they always turn malignant, it can be early on or later. I was advised to leave one along on a 5yo, 6 years later I went through the gamut of useless and expensive treatments (cimetidine, cisplatin) to lose him at 11 years old. I was then told by the leading authority in the UK that excising them is probably the best option but again not enough is really known about their pathology for anyone to really know at this time. Good luck OP, if you need someone knowledgable on the subject, email D Knottenbelt at Liverpool University.
