I've always wanted to do it. Its in Cottesmore country this year and the hedges are great. I hunted with the Cottesmore for the last 4 seasons and every Tuesday was brilliant due to being in the best country.

You need a horse that will jump hedges with ditches toward and the odd bit of timber. Its all over lovely grassland.

Def, def do it if you've got a good horse. Its quite a tough course though so horse will need to be v.fit.

Best of luck!!

Hmmm, not much time to get some practice in is there (19 days to be precise!) I shall be taking my own line on Saturday then, not queueing for a 3ft hunt jump. :smirk:

k9h, I'd spotted that. I've got a very heavy gel pad but got rid of my weight cloth and lead many years ago. Any other ideas of how to get to 11st, other than eating lots of pies? :D

Are you running in your XC colours or Hunt coat?? That will add weight. But gonna have to carry lots for you to get there! :p

This is making me laugh so much. Since moving from Leics last year I've wanted to do a hunt race. Our hunt are doing one in March and I thought I could do it on my little 15hh cobby pocket rocket. Sadly women have to carry 11 stone too and there is no way bar putting bricks in my pocket that I could carry that much. Bit unfair for the pony too!!

Remember though that a saddle and your hunting kit will add about 11/2 - 2 stone so might not be too difficult to do it although it sounds as though you are a skinny bean!!

PMSL at the thought of you with bricks in your pocket, going like stink on your 15hh trusty steed. :D Mind you, my hunt coat looks like a shapeless donkey jacket so I could be mistaken for a paddy builder if I did that! (you think I'm joking, see below, and picture me leaning on a shovel....)

I'm at my winter weight at the moment (that extra half a stone is to keep me warm, nothing at all to do with red wine or chocolate!) so maybe I won't need too many bricks? :(

I agree with K9h - just eat and drink like its going out of fashion (what a hardship) and then get on your pony and go and race. We'll all be routing for you!!

I think I may be going up to go hunting after the race so will def. cheer you on!!

I've found a weight cloth and lead (think it went to the Olympics and won a medal actually, how cool is that?); I've spoken to my vet who has done it twice and said if he can do it then he's damn sure I can! He's going to find out about where it is this year and report back. It should be a serious day's hunting tomorrow at Chadwell so will test Max to the max :p and report back (hopefully not from Derby Royal Infirmary via the Air Ambulance!)

OMG Max and I had so much fun today! (I've just been trawling through the pics to see if I could find one of the superstar pony but no, just lots of OH on Punk!)

Max did everything today: he was bold, he was clever, he went like the proverbial off a shovel, he ignored others' efforts to take him off his line and we only had one aborted jump when some smart a**e stopped and then walked nonchalantly across my line (I'm normally not averse to a challenge but jumping a horse and a f*** off great hedge in one might have been a bit too much of a challenge!) :smirk: Later on I canvassed opinion on whether I should or shouldn't do "The Ride" from experienced folk that have already done it, and back came a resounding "yes". OH is going to make sure Max and I are well insured before we do it - obviously. ;)

Big carrot for Max!
I did it once with Fernie jumping horse in ditch infront of hedge! Never again! Mind I was pulling to stop but horsey was having none of it!
Shall see if I can get the day off and come down with camera!!

Would never laugh! Have some steel toe caps will they do!?! Told W & S tonight as we were at vet talk on sarcoids, she said you will walk it! Though she did panic thinking you were doing it on humonger horse! So put her mind at rest!

Yep, it's 26 Feb Guildford, hopefully see you there (I'll be the ashen-faced one, hiding in the portaloo!)

k9h, steel toe caps should do the trick. As if I'd do it on the very precious HumungaHorse.....(who is slow as a boat anyway!) :p

I went and walked the course yesterday with my vet, who is also doing it (and has got round twice before - brave man!), so I am now officially bricking it (if you'll pardon the expression). Not only is it a long long way round (it took us two hours to walk it) but a lot of the things we have to get to the other side of seem to be leaning towards you, so lets hope Max has tidy front legs and springy back legs that day. There are several hedges I can't see over the top of, lots of ditches and it's up hill and down dale - god I've been spoilt eventing for so many years it's turned me into a complete and utter wuss.

Methinks Max and I need some major practice on Saturday in readiness for it.
