Asking for someone looking, what sort of horses are available there, and price range please - does anyone know?

She'd looking for a light/middleweight between 4 and 16 sound, for a bit of everything. Decent rider has reschooled ex racers, sensible sort, very limited funds to buy so thinking of looking round the sales.

I've been to Melton some years ago, you might find her sort there, at Beeston last week the top price was £1200, but if I may ask, if funds are so limited is your friend really able to afford to keep a horse and the unexpected bills they come with? Particularly from a sales, where it could either come with something not yet apparent, or catch something while there.

Yes, she is, limited funds to buy as she didn't expect to be looking. Previous horse was very well looked after, nothing sinister.

Thanks for the reply.

*mainly* gypsy cobs and those past their sell by or very young (ie yearlings). However, a bargain CAN be had at the right time of year, and there's usually the odd decent looking horse, though not many are warranted. Prices vary from a few hundred ginueas to 1500 or thereabouts.

I think if I had the experience of your friend I'd look into rehoming a racehorse from a yard rather than the sales. At least you kind of know what you're getting and may still get a bargain.

Thanks Charlie, I think she'd be better going to a trainer for a racehorse too, but I said I'd try to find out for her.

Cheers

Hi Melton is not a bad place to buy from i have brought from there several times. although if your friend is big on TB then i would recommend going one of the TB sales (ascot or doncaster) as they have hundreds there which people did not want. Most yards are over run with TBs and lots are currently going to the meat man! at doncaster people where paying for someone to take horses off their hands.

I would opt for the bloodstock sales too - my friend bought a 4yr old tb 2 years ago it had raced - she did BD/BE and showing with it, the horse was fab. Although i did think she could do with some time off before her new hectic schedule kicked in.
Oh and the price although dont know the exact price it was somewhere around 600guineas

well, she could save the meat man a job! Doncaster is literally 20 minutes from here.

I do think a TB is the best bet, she's used to them and gets on with them.

Thank you all for the replies - great help.
