Membranes

Try Manchester Plastics. They supplied our surface and couldn't fault them on price, delivery etc. Do you really want a membrane? We were advised against as I do quite a lot of lungeing and apart from coming to the top they can cause problems with drainage so better to spend the money on drainage and surface itself.

How do you stop the stones rising to the top if you don't have a membrane? What surface do you use?

We built the manege on a large raised area that had previously been a gravel pit filled with several feet of rubble. This was levelled and rolled then for the stone base we used road planings rather than new 'clean' stone.

For a 20x40 it took about 360 tonnes (18 lorry loads) to get enough for a 6" base which was rolled flat within an inch of it's life. Because the planings still have some tar residue on them I think it helps bind it together but they still drain.

The sand was then laid and rolled straight onto the planings (140 tonnes of equestrian silica sand from M. Plastics) to give a 4" thickness and we had 2" (20 tonnes) of rubber chippings on top.

There's only me using it with one horse who can pratt about at times leaving sizeable 'holes' in the rubber but he's never dug up any stones nor have the pesky rabbits who use it as a giant litter tray!

Thanks - Appreciate that - we do have the option to use road planings - I'll have to have a think about all the options now! :)
