Ok, am really hoping that this post doesn't get smutty as I could do with some advice for my OH.

He has announced that he would like to have some riding lesson on Spring, this is fine and I am hapy to teach him to ride. So the problem is this: he says that his crown jewels are getting squashed and he finds rising trot particularly uncomfortable

So any advice from any male riders out there? Are there particular underwear that may help? He doesn't have any jods at the moment (and I am not sure he will be convinced to wear a pair!), would jods help? He is really keen but as I am sure you can imagine that both of us feel a need to protect his manhood!

and plenty more giggles.

Now i've picked myself up off the floor I can probably give you an answer......... I've never asked any of my male instructors what they do with their "meat and 2 veg" but then, they've never complained that they're being squished, so i'm guessing he needs to work on his position, so to speak

Or maybe they have a secret device that stops them being squished?!

If 'ladies are uncomfortable riding, it would make me think they were sitting on their 'fork' area (I sound like an underware ad!

) rather than on their seat bones.
I would have thought it would be the same for men

Also, I would imagine a very snug and supportive pair of pants were in order

I have taught my OH to ride and we have tried riding pants without sucess. However we now have a solution - mens speedo trunks - the shorts ones rather than the briefs. He only banged them in his first few lessons, but I lunged him for 6 lessons and he bought breeches after his first lesson, then banging was not the problem - he actually then got friction burns - or rubs so the swimming trunks have solved that. I have discussed this with several people and the answer for banging seems to be tight pants, tuck them away basically and no jeans the seams rub

Maybe but I don't think so, it's got a lot to do with the position, although common sense would tell you that it's probably not the best idea to wear loose fitting undies, i.e boxer shorts, he'd def need to wear something to keep 'em all in and up!!

My ex OH had same problem with rising trot. I'd be in fits of giggles as he'd be fine for a bit then miss a beat and be in agony. Also coming back from canter to trot wasn't pleasant. It seemed once he got riding fit wasn't too bad. But Murphy's high pommel saddle has sorted out quite a few ex boyf from wanting to ride ever again! The racing saddles at work give the men no problems at all and a few ride outside of work so will ask them what they do to cope.

Tescos trunks with cotton and lycra, apparently!! and rider position. He needs to keep his breast bone up and his 'tail bone down, thatway he wont come crashing down on his bits!!!

As a male who has ridden for 43 years and has not lost the ability to sire children (just the opportunity) I guess I could answer this.

Boxers are out. Y fronts are also not a good idea as the gap can allow certain elements to become trapped.
Mens briefs are are the way to go. They must be tight fitting but wide enough at narrowist point to enclose and cup all articles that require containing without gaps around leg to crotch area.
It is then critical to dress left or right. A perfect centerline will not get extra marks here.
Selection of perfect underwear is of critical importance to me, especially if long periods of canter or jumping is involved.
All that said there is NO underwear that can protect from a slam down on to the pommel. This situation is the best incentive I know of to develop balance and position.
Hope that helps without being too graphic.

Ok...rushes off to ask OH. Response.......Ouch......whince....pulls face...then says...Def related to position if he is just learning and unfortunately he's bound to bang them a few times while learning.

Lets hope he masters his position sooner rather than later !!

Fantastic, thank-you! He is reassured!

4faulter - are jods essential at this early stage? I don't want him to shell out on loads of accessories if he isn't going to stick it out, but if jods make a real difference then it would be worth it.

Not really. I sometimes ride in jeans without any additional discomfort except that I loose the hair off my calves from the stirrup leathers. However, I do find it much more coimfortable generally to ride in jods. Jeans and boxers would be a disaster.

When I first started to ride it did hurt a bit, but I think it was more to do with technique than anything else. When trotting for example some folks drop themselves into the saddle on the downwards motion rather than maintaining control this would help reduce the squashing. Breeches definately helped I felt a right twit when I was forced into them but now I'm ok with the look. Oh, & never wear apple grabber underwear you're just asking for trouble

Mmm I may try and convince him to try jods/breeches. I have no idea what apple-grabber underwear is and I am not entirely sure I want to know!

Excellent but make sure you put boots with them it isn't right that a man should wear jod boots & chaps or even worse & I have seen this and was disgusted by it....jod boots & brreches only...surely he must have questioned this look???

My OH finds wearing tight long briefs - sort of tight boxer shorts best. But the very best answer is to ride western - he finds this most comfortable of all. Just don't try jumping in the saddle more than 2'.
