Menage/arena surface

Has anyone used slate sand as a surface for an arena? We are building one on a budget - anyone any ideas?

Hi, just wondering if you went ahead and used the slate sand? We're in north Wales too and are considering this surface too after having a sample from the quarry. If you have got it, I'd be very interested to know your opinion thanks
