I have been using a friends menage for over a year now. She charges me £5 a time, whether it be 20 mins or an hour.

I had a text yesterday to say she is putting it up to £10 a time. Thats fine, but it is not well maintained, and its smaller than normal size, and I don't think she has any public liability insurance.

Does she have to have this if she is hiring it out? I have my own personal insurance. She has two full liveries as well.

To be honest if she is a friend does it matter? It has been o.k. for a year but now she is putting the price up you have questions.
I would see it differently if you were hireing one commersialy but your donation could help with the wear and tear.
I know many would view it differently to me. If you are not happy hire another one.
We often do things amongst ourselves at our own risk.
I would have no quams giving a £10 donation for the use of a menage at my own risk. Haveing insurance would put the price up.
If i decide to do something and it goes wrong its my fault.
Have a chat with your friend about it.

mmm , my friends use mine for free , it stands me in good stead if i need a favour! i let acquaintances use it at £5 a time as long as they are not an inconveniece to me!

the commercial rate at yards seems to be about £10-£15 an hour in my area , but thats at a proper insured yard running as a business

Only reason I question it is my RI thought it was a cheek, especially as I have known her for 6 years and do her lots of favours like letting her use my box on occasions and looking after her horses when she can't get anyone else!

I'm happy to pay as it is just down the road, I never thought about the public liability insurance until today when my RI mentioned it.

The only time I've used it for an hour a week free is when I rode her horse for her last winter because she didn't have the time.

Oh I need to increase my charges dramatically then! I have a semi professional surface on mine and charge £2.50 per half hour. Yes she must have public liability insurance to hire it out or she can be sued personally if something happens to a rider whilst on her property. Your friend must also have commercial planning for the school in the first place or she is not allowed to hire it out and if she doesn't have commercial planning then her public liability insurance is void! Its a mine field but she needs to cover herself.
