Men's riding trousers...

Disclaimer: there are some old threads on here about this, but none of the links to recommended websites work.

Looking for recommendations for riding trousers for OH. He had his first riding lesson last night since childhood; loved it and wants to start going regularly!

His jeans chafed his calves yesterday, so he wants something better to ride in, but isn't keen on skin tight jods. Maybe bootcut riding trousers, or jeans but with no seams - something he can just wear jodhpur boots with, without chaps? Or should I just tell him to get breeches and have done with it?

Found these https://www.decathlon.co.uk/straight-leg-jeans-black-id_8169432.html but he's 6'3 so not sure if they'd be long enough in the leg... and he's just told me they don't have his size anyway.

All ideas welcome :)
 
I'm 6ft 3. The Harry hall breeches are pretty roomy and pleated so nowhere near skin tight, I have a few pairs of the decathlon ones but go a size up as they come up quite tight otherwise!! I bought a pair in the sale in my normal size and was banned from wearing them at the yard as apparently they were 'obscene' haha
 
Haha - yes, "obscene" is what I'm trying to avoid ;)

He's looking at breeches now, having decided they are probably better than denim especially if it's raining (Keen?!?! Proving himself to not be a fair weather rider already, I am so impressed..!).

Def go for breeches. Far more comfortable than any jeans type trousers.
If budget allows I would also suggest some long boots rather than jod boots.
Other option I found comfortable to ride in were jeans with Mark Todd Full length chaps (fabric not leather). Very handy as can just slip on over normal gear and to do seem to prevent chafe.
 
I bought some nice Mark Todd breeches for my OH, with pleated front. He's 6ft and has rugby player legs, and they're not obscene :D

I just marched him along to the shop and got him to try on loads of mens breeches until he found something he (and I) could live with!
 
My OH wears Georg Schumacher cord ones - again pleated. He has a pair in navy which he wears with the Mountain Horse boots - he looks like a mounted policeman (and I have told him that too!)
 
I find ordinary moleskins or chinos are fine - but long boots very good. If he has large feet finding them can be a ******. Try, believe it or not, a place called Soldier of Fortune - they do German Officers Jackboots for re-enactors (!!!) - £95 and VERY good value.
 
I'd recommend Mark Todd Auckland breeches with long boots - had mine for ages, worn them in all weathers...comfy and durable (albeit a bit faded now!).
 
Thanks for all the recommendations. He got some, they are... tighter than I expected, but they look ok thankfully haha! Going to refer back to this thread when he needs some more (which he undoubtedly will) :)

Also went to get him fitted for a hat at the weekend, but there weren't any he liked in his size so he's ordered that online too now. He did manage to pick up a bargain Toggi long sleeved top though. Really looks the part now, bless him!

We're going to Wales on Friday and doing a mixed ability woodland hack, can't wait. It's so lovely that he not only shows an interest in my hobby/passion/life but wants to get involved as well. He's a keeper :D
 
My OH half likes the Mark Todd ones or John Whitaker ones. They have the plaited front. He doesnt like many other makes.
 
Mark Todd breaches are good but ouchy ouchy he has got to ride in boots or gaiters. I hacked out in jod boots at the weekend and ended up walking for over an hour as trotting was pinching my calves. Never again!

He could wear a loose fitting pair of chinos but there is no grip to them so a gentle hack yes but anything else I always like to have a suede bum pair of breeches.
 
Thanks Ant. He's got some short boots and half chaps... He has big muscly calves so not sure he'd get long boots to fit without a considerable financial outlay! At this early stage in his riding career I thought it better to go for something more wallet-friendly. There's always the option to buy more things as time goes on..!
 
I would go for breeches too rather than jods.
As for boots, a pair of paddock boots and some secondhand Ariat half chaps would see him well.
Give him the real look with a jumping crop tucked into the chaps.
 
If he's just into hacking and pleasure riding, get some endurance fenders and then he can wear jeans to his hearts content. If you look at "Western" wear, you will find jeans where the seams lie the right way to prevent chafing.

These are the exact ones my OH has. He's worn them for years and buys a couple of pairs at a time. They do tend to shrink when they're washed though so he buys them a few sizes bigger than his usual size and washes them before wearing.

They're really quite nice. They do just look like jeans (I'm really not keen on men in jodhpurs or breeches) and even have a dead clever heel loop concealed halfway up the leg so they stay looking like jeans!
 
Funnily enough, I just stumbled over this thread whilst investigating riding wear for my OH who sounds just like yours, OP! 6'3", big muscly calves, keen to not look like a prat.

ponyparty - please may I ask what chaps your partner has found to fit? I am anxious to keep mine as comfy as possible and don't want him to pinch his calves, but not sure on good half chaps for big calves like his!

Kramer have a decent selection of men's riding wear. I would suggest breeches and long boots (or short boots and half chaps) will be more comfy than riding jeans/trousers and short boots.

My husband cycles as well as riding so he is quite happy with the tight jodhs and can't understand why people wear the pleated baggy ones.
