So I was going to post this before seeing the "went to see the puppy" thread.
I was talking last weekend to my bosses wife about their impending new Lab puppy when she mentioned he still has a mentor when looking at getting a new dog. I was slightly shocked by this as he's early 50's had dogs all his life including breeding a litter or two of his own.
It then got me thinking, when I brought Rox I was 4 1/2 months pregnant and had never had a dog before. My now ex promised to help me train her along with his dog who used to be a successful gun dog trainer. Well neither helped so I now have a slightly unruly boxer who is slowly coming round with help of my boss.
Would I be wise to find a breeder/trainer or two who would be prepared to mentor me so that when the time comes to find a new 4 legged companion I am much more informed and can make better choices? (I wouldn't expect it to be for free!)
