Opinions? I'm looking for a 3.5t box, not necessarily with living, enough to fit my 14.2 and possibly a friend's 15.2 TB. Obviously the lighter the unladen weight the better, as it gives me more of a chance of being able to fit 2 on. My budget isn't huge so the VW LT35s seem to fit my criteria but I've also seen a lovely little Merc 308D. Still not sure on the dimensions of the merc so that might be a no go but does anyone have any idea on the unladen weight of these? Obviously interior fittings etc will affect it but any kind of idea would be much appreciated, as would general opinions on the 2.

Thanks!

We've just bought a 1984 a reg LT35, we paid £1100 for 'Victor the VW' and although we need to tidy him up, he is sound and gives very comfy ride, he's only done 48,000 miles. we used him at the weekend for pony club and he's petrol, we did 85 mies on approx £25 of fuel.. They are light to drive thou no power steering and very stable on the road, we had a Merc 308 Motor home last year thats on an identical chassis to the horseboxes, we found it very very heavy to drive and changing gear was a nightmare.. it also wallowed like a boat.... I'd choose LT anyday.. good luck x

I have an LT 35 coachbuilt box, reliable, light to steer and a very stable ride for the horses.

Don't know on the merc though

I *think* Mike007 on here is pretty knowledgeable on all things horsebox, hopefully he will be along soon!

Thanks for your replies :) I've only heard good things about the VWs. One came up near(ish) me at the weekend and went within hours. Makes sense, it was a complete bargain! Will have to dig my money out so I'm ready with the cash if another one comes up!

I had a J reg LT35 diesel and it never let me down, although it was pretty slow up hills, it just kept chugging along. It had an Ifor williams back which wasn't ideal as I think the centre of gravity was a bit high so it did roll a little bit.
I had it for 4 years and when I sold it I only lost £200, I am sure I could have got more for it as I advertised it on the Saturday and it was gone on the Monday as they are popular.

I'v got a VW LT35 - Bertie :)
Really good little box, has never let me down so far and has started in the coldest of weather! Mines only a 2.5 diesel engine, so its a bit slow up hills, but I don't care, I never go fast with the ned in it anyway!
I'd definately reccomend them! :)
