Has anyone got, had or driven a merc 814 horse truck? i have a 3 horse 7.5T truck that has a decent sezed living in it. I usually only carry 2 horses and the engine is less than 6 years old.

I was wondering waht people thought to the power behind them? i find mine struggles quite a bit on hills and i dont know if this is my driving or the truck? i havnt driven many horse trucks so any help or advise please?

Mine doesn't like hills, the gears seem too far apart. You either have to rev the nuts off it or end up changing down.
7.5 only carry 2 big uns, would prob carry 4 as huge in the back but would never do it.

i found my gears were a bit far apart and it was a little strange going into reverse every now and again so removed the seats, mats and the pannel to get to the base of the gear stick. it turned out as the engine is a left hand drive theres a linkage to place th gear stick for a right hander, two of the bolts holding the linkage together had snapped an the linkage although still together and working wasnt working properly, two new bolts and the gears feel like my car.
thank god the rest of the bolts held and the linkage didnt fall apart on the motorway!

i think il have it serviced before the next plating though

Ditto on the weight question, however they are a bit flat as they are non turbo and built to last not go fast , mercedes have caught up now with the atego mine goes realy well, even going up the pennines on the m62, ( 5600 kg empty)... I would have someone compitant sevice and check it over but I think you will find its a bit heavier than it should be

and its just the nature of the beast...

Ours is the same, a cracking drive, goes on and on, but find a hill and you're back down the speed and gears!
It'll pull forever, and its the same regardless of what is inside

Don't agree about the weight, they were built to pull and unless you're carrying 9t you won't find much difference. Its still worth getting it on a bridge though as not knowing isn't an excuse to defra.
You just learn to time your overtaking and look ahead. If you see a slight incline you dive into the left lane and hide behind a 44 tonner until it's gone.....

Fairly sure mines an 814....its an L reg 7.5t merc anyway! Feels very quick compared to previous B reg Bedford but the guys who look after it for me said exactly as someone above said - built to last not go fast! However it will sail along on motorway at 55 - 60mph even with 3 up - yes I have checked and it weighs 5.2t unladen and my three are 420, 520 and 550kg so am well within weight.
I find on very steep hills I do have to change down fairly sharpish unless get a decent run up to them, one hill near us I do need 1st gear where I used to get up it in the beddy in 2nd.... admittedly only ever carried two in Bedford but she was 500kg heavier unladen!
We also had the same as welshrider with the bolts snapping on the linkage - well worth getting checked over!

Love the truck as a whole though, brakes are killer and take a bit of getting used to so as not to hurl passengers through windscreen but other than that its a fabulous truck.
