Have just started to properly train my ex racer to show jump and have got the bug back (havent had a horse before him since I was 17 - so 15 yrs ago - and so took me a while to loose the terror and remember how it works when it came to jumping again

So I have now started to think about having an aim for our training - alot of the people at my yard go to Merrist Wood for their SJ and dressage classes - so I was thinking about there. But my question is - do they mind having people who are still rather hit and miss turn up? I am a bit embarrased to ask anyone at my yard as they are all serious competitors and I don't want them knowing I am thinking of going!

unaffiliated. just a bit nervous because he is a very impressive looking horse (well I am a bit biased!) and he does have a cracker of a jump on him but only when his brain is engaged. Once he winds himself up it can be a little on the erratic (not to say slightly terrifying side). So just don't want to go and have people thinking who is that idiot

I think merrist wood do clear round evenings- how about trying one of them before a comp so you both feel more confident on the day? Good luck

Just go and have some fun. Try not to worry about what other people think. My ex racer mare is a loney and only when she keeps her cool do we even have a chance of getting round with out a cricket score. I go affiliated on her and to be honest if their are people snigering and laughing it's only cause they have there beautifully turned out ready made competition horse with them that they actually dont need to "ride".

Go and enjoy your horse and stuff everyone elses thoughts

Merrist Wood is usualy very friendly, just be nice to the stewards on the door.

Collecting ring can be a bit hairy but that is OK because you're so pleased to get into the ring you don't care what the course is like.

I take my two eratic novice ex-racers to MW and never have any probs... the warm up for the Unaff can sometimes be a bit 'busy' but its usually ok. Course is uaually quite forgiving too, nothing too scarey or technical in the 2'3-2'9 classes...

go for it...!

I watched a bit of an unaffilitated class at Merrist Wood a few weeks back and it seemed reasonably welcoming. At the end of the day, if you pay your entry fee, you're as entitled as anyone else to do your round(s). By its very nature, unaffilitated should be a learning experience for everyone.

I'm there regularly - there this weekend too

I would hardly say that Tia and I are any good at this SJ lark but it's perfect for green poines and horses
