Mesh fly leg wraps

Does anyone use the mesh leg wraps designed to stop flies biting?

I use cream on my Connie but it only lasts so long and he’s destroying his already rubbish feet stamping plus he has arthritic hocks and I would rather he didn’t aggravate them. I’ve seen them advertised but would like to know they actually work and stay up.

The ones we use here (USA) are “Shoofly”. Or Professional Choice do some as well. Not sure if they are available in the UK or not!

Ps and they work really well but they are lightweight things not the boot types you seee from premier equine etc.

Thank you that’s really kind but I need some now. I’ve found them on Amazon but they are very expensive between £60-90 and still need to be shipped so I think I’m going to order some of the more traditional one from Horseware or PE or he won’t have much hoof left.

I used the mesh boots on Alf for years, and found them very effective. I have the Shires ones, and Lemieux Gladiator mesh, and they are both great

I ended up buying two sets of Rambo fly leg protectors from Hope Valley which were on sale so much reduced, one in pony and the other in cob just in case the pony weren’t large enough. They are lovely and light and as the pony ones fit B it means DP can have the cob sized ones. Fitting went well and nobody objected so they will go on from tomorrow morning.

I was always surprised how well they stayed in place.
I did try Rambo, just be aware to keep an eye (the design may have changed since mine) but the rear strip is stiffened to prevent sliding down and one of mine kinked and rubbed a tendon over night quite nastily

Thank you for the tip, I will check to make sure I catch it if they kink.

I’ve just been down to check on them and they are very happily dozing under the trees with no foot stomping or tail swishing and so far no slipping wraps. They are both cool under them and their new fly rugs and they both still have their fly masks on so I think they are much more comfortable. I will take everything off tonight so they can have a good roll.

I use the rambo vamoose mesh ones and they do seem to really help with the leg stamping. I only leave them on during the day so that they can still hopefully be the majority of the time without things on their legs.

Those are the ones I got B, they only had pony size left and the cob ones are exactly the same minus the Vamoose. I’m not going to leave anything on them overnight, I’m not a huge fan of fly masks anyway especially at night but they have really needed them during the daytime this year.

The Shoofly ones are the best! I’m an American now living in Germany, and I am still buying them. I bought a replacement pair last year off of my USA Amazon and shipped to me over here. Of course the shipping was a bit more but it wasn’t too crazy and for me it was totally worth it. I can make a pair last for about two years even with my horse wearing them pretty much 24/7 for the summer and fall.

The Horseware Fly Boots that are slim fitting are not too bad but they do sag and I find them a bit warm. However they have been a real life saver for me lately because my horse just cut his pastern on the inside about 2cm up from his coronary band, so these fly boots where the only thing that kept some kind of bandage in place over the area since the boots go over the coronary band and onto the hoof a bit. Plus they are definitely more breathable than any other medicinal bandage.

Oh to be living in Germany again instead of the USA!

I also use the Shoofly Leggins and so far cannot complain.

I second the PE ones. Long lasting and very lightweight.
