Does it make any difference how the stable is laid out ie where hay and water, door are as to where horse mucks and lies down
I'm not talking about walking muck around, just where they chose to muck and lie down??

Don't put your hay at the back of the stable if you have a nosy horse. He's just grab a mouthful, turn round and walk to the door, poo, turn, trample in poo, grab a mouthful of hay and repeat.

Hay by the door I reckon helps so they can look out whilst they eat, other wise they'll be walking back and forth to the hay and mixing it all up.

I'm lucky that my mare always poos at the back in a pile so I make sure there's enough bed in the rest of the stable so she doesn't have to sleep on her poo. The old boy however has the same layout and poos everywhere and sleeps on a few each night:rolleyes:

Sorry, cross posted with 9tails. Water by the door helps too I think. Both mine have 2 water buckets side by side but always favour the ones nearest the door.

To an extent, but horses do choose their own places. You can make it easier to muck out though. Eg if horse spends a lot of time hanging out the door, put hay at the front. If the stable drains towards the right of the door, put hay on the left of the door, so wee doesn't spread through stable as much. Generally the poo will be wherever the horse stands the most. So if horse constantly walking from hay at back to the door, it will be walked in everywhere.
