Hi guys,

Looking for a little advice . I have an English springer spaniel who’s now 7. The last 2 years he’s gained a lot of weight. I originally just thought it was due to him getting older. I have tried putting him on diets he’s just seems to get bigger. Whilst I think he’s getting tip bits off someone bit of meat etc. I have changed his kibble biscuits to a weight management biscuits he’s also getting less . I have tried a few of the different brands the vet recommend for more than 3 months at a time. It made no difference. We have changed his treats to be natural fish and he only get the odd one. He used to eat a lot more than he does now. We have tried only feeding poultry ( chicken/ turkey) only fish etc instead of wet meat. Slow feeder bowels.
He’s still enjoying his walks but can be a little stiff when he gets back. He’s also become very quite in the house not as playful anymore with toys, me or our other dogs. He has however become very “needy” flowing me like a sheep or anyone in the house. This is not like him he never used to be a cuddly dog. He’s just not his self anymore. I spoke to the vet again when he went for vaccines in September she told me to keep him on strict diet and recommend what to feed him. We did he gets more than the excises she said he should be having. But he’s not losses Any weight or waist line he actually got bigger. The more I cut the bigger he gets. I had said would take him back in the new year if he didn’t loose any weight. But lockdown came in. Do you think the vet would have picked up on a metabolic problem when she saw him in October ? Is there anything else I can do ? I will take him back and get some tests done but not till lockdowns over as I am CEV . Thanks guys

You say he's been on a diet but there's also mention of potential tit bits, change of treats, wet meat as well as kibble - it's possible he's still getting a lot more than you think. If he's maintaining or gaining weight on a strict diet (meals measured on scales not by eye, zero extras) then he needs to go back to the vet.
