Metacam - Allergic reaction

My Border Collie has had one dose of Metacam and overnight went from a bouncy, crazy twirling dog to an absolute wreck. He threw up all over, was panting like crazy and incredibly stiff and cramped up. Bloods showed high liver enzymes and a high white cell count, he also had a raging temperature.

Two days later he is still very stiff and lethargic and although he is eating he is slow and seems to find it hard work.

He's had antibiotics and B12 injections and is on anti B tablets. He's also had a pain killer but I refused cartrophen as I want to know just what is going on before randomly putting more drugs in his system.

Could this be an allergic reaction to the Metacam and if so why is it going on for so long? Do his symtoms raise any other ideas in anyone's mind as he's just so ill and I'm not getting any solutions from the vet. He is back to see vet again tomorrow.

Any comments/ideas would be most gratefully received.
 
What is he on the metacam for? Some of his symptoms sound like Buffy who had immune mediated poly arthritis, a reaction to her boosters we think. OI can understand you being wary of more painkillers after this reaction but have to say that Buff was on cartrophen injections for a couple of years with no problems at all. Can't really suggest anything else, hope your vet can find the cause tomorrow.
 
If the Metacam is for arthirtis then I can recommend an excellent alternative. My rottie has literally just started Trocoxil. It is one tablet every 4 weeks. She had her first dose on Wednesday and we are seeing massive improvements already. :D
 
Hard for us to comment as you haven't said why the dog needed Metacam, I would imagine somethings going on hence why you had antibiotics and vitb12........ ?? More details please x
 
My dalmatian had a bad reaction from Troxocil - she had blood in her poo. It then went from bad to worse while the vets experimented with different drugs - refusing to eat, then when she started to eat she was being sick the whole time. The problem is that the Troxocil is in their blood stream for a very long time and any other drug will react with it and make the problem worse. In the end, I refused to let them give her anything else until I was completely sure everything had cleared out of her system. I was certain we were going to lose her.

We then started her on Previcox about 6 months ago and Equimins Blooming Joints Flexijoint and I'm not kidding she is like a 12 year old puppy :)
 
My dads dog is on trocoxil, and its made such a difference!!! Dalidaydream even though the trocoxils in the system for 30 ish days it shouldnt cause long term side effects, usually they are transient and pass quickly! If you read the SPC for previcox side effects are much more likely than with trocoxil, it just goes to show that each animal is an individual!
 
Original reason for vet visit was a change in his behaviour, he was growling at the other two dogs but only when he was lying on the floor, this is a dog without a bad bone in his body so very out of character. He's an 11 year old BC with god awful hips, he does occasionally lock his off hip up and out, asking him to sit usually put it back. He's a high energy, bonkers dog who twirls and whirls and leaps into the air constantly, it's rare for him to actually walk so hard to see any unsoundness.

He is now improving but very slowly, the vet does now agree it was the Metacam, it had to be, nothing else had changed. Internet search does say it can cause liver problems, probably means after long term use but I suppose there is always the one who reacts badly. He does have a sparkle back in his eyes now but still tires easily so I'm taking things very slowly with him.

My 14 year old Husky X is on Trocoxil and it's brilliant on it, I would be wary of it for the BC after his problems. The vet is thinking of trying him on Cartrophen but I think I would prefer him drug free for a little while longer!

Sorry to hear you had problems with the Troxocil. Sage is doing really well on it. In fact hubby wants me to stop giving it to her as she has gone totally bonkers!!

:D Sorry yes, she's 12 years old and like a 12 week old puppy - oh you know what i mean.

Isn't it lovely when you find what works for your dog and they can enjoy life again.

The problem was that after we noticed the blood we saw a 2nd vet at the same practice who decided to give her steroids when the trocoxil was still in her system which made her sick. They then gave her drugs to stop her being sick and she started refusing food - most odd for a dalmatian. So not all the fault of the Trocoxil, more the vet really. We took her off all drugs and gradually nursed her back until I couldn't stand the sight of her struggling with the arthritis any more. We decided to give Previcox a go because it is supposed to be the best for dogs with sensitive stomachs. She is only on 1/2 a tablet a day but it seems to be enough along with the Flexijoint. The vet says she is reluctant to increase it after her previous reaction so we are just keeping our fingers crossed.

Like you say all animals react differently and its a case of finding what's best for yours
