Hi, does anyone use metacam for their horses please? Mine is due to start on it any day, having been on Arquel for 4 years (no longer produced

) The doseage via the measuring syringe is fine, but it means the 100ml bottle will only last me 10 days. Can you reduce the dose like you do with bute and other powder products? When she started on Arquel I had to use 1 sachet per day, but after the acute stage, she went down to half a sachet, then finally down to quarter per day. God, I thought Arquel was expensive at around £75 per month, but this is going to set me back well over £100 per month. I can't use bute and the like due to the interaction with another drug she is also on (that costs me over £200 a month as well

Oh dear poor you. I have only used it short term when I didnt trust my lad to eat bute after he got stuck upside down with his feet up a bank & his body wedged under a fence (dont ask!)

Its great stuff but mighty pricey to be feeding long term.

My doggie is on Metacam has been for some years, she has been on the same dose all the time. Suppose it depends on whats wrong ? She has arthritis.

Yes, its arthritis - you should see her knees! I think I need to do a bit of trial and error. I guess by now I'm used to her costing me a fortune in the veterinary department - at least £16000 in the last 4 years just for her prescriptions !!!!!!!!!!!

To be honest Highlandponylass, I think it is Danilon is bute related. Basically, it all hangs on how the drug travels around in the blood. The blood protein which transports it is already occupied by her other drug so either, the antiinflamm is blocked, or it affects the processing rate of the first drug, which could be very dangerous, and in her case, rather fatal. But that is really helpful to know about your mog - thanks. I have a friend who is a pharmacist taking a look at the human model for me.

Hiya,

I have my Rottie x Bullmastiff on metacam as he has really bad athritis of the shoulder, not sure if it works same for horses but he started off on the full dose of 30ml a day and he is now down to 10ml daily, you can tell the days he has not had it as he starts to slowly go lame but as soon as he gets his dose the next morning he improves through out the day.

Hope this helps, he is also on atopica which counteracts the effects of metacam or vice versa can't remember which way but on my vets advice I kept going until everyhting had settled down.
Hope thats of some help.
