Meteor/shooting star

Did anyone else see a meteor/shooting star tonight at about 5.45pm? I was travelling towards wellingborough, Northamptonshire and it was to my left.
All the cars in front of me slowed right down--nearly caused an accident!

It is a bit scary in a way, as I am going to see "War of The Worlds" tonight and I thought I was just letting my imagination run away with me.
 
I saw it too!

There were loads of jets going around us last night, so at first I thought it was one of them - until I realised that they really don't look like that! :D

I saw my first shooting star last week so I'm stupildly excited by the whole thing!
 
I'm surprised that more Horseypeople don't see these quite common events considering they are often out in dark fields away from light polution.

I've seen some truly fantastic ones while putting my horses away - and still look skywards pretty regularly even though I sadly don't have any now.

One beautiful summer's night I went up to check my daughter's retired 2nd pony who shared a turnout field with several others - when they all came over for a few pony nuts the sky lit up by regular "shooting stars" - lost in the spectacle I suddenly realised that all the ponies and me were all looking up at the same thing and just for that flash of a moment we were all animals together. Magical.
 
i see shooting stars most nights when out with the horse/dogs :)
i saw a flipping huge one last night so i assume its the same one?! biggest i've ever seen - but i'm up in perthshire...!?

I was listening to Radio 5 and there were reports coming in from around the country--mainly in the north. I've never seen one before and it was huge. At first i thought it was a plane
 
There are supposed to be meteor "showers" but as I have never seen one perhaps it is this? The shooting stars I have seen are all quite small and litterlly shoooting...blink and they're gone!

You could have quite easily seen the same one as everyone else - you being "up north" won't make any difference because the position of the "shooting star" when it's burning is so high up the angle is virtually the same.

And yes to everyone who questions the speed - most are over and done very quickly - less than a blink, really big ones will leave a star trail in your eyes for a second ort two - any bigger than that and you can start worrying!

I have been known to spend the night lying in a field for the Perseid shower in August. December might not be such a good plan!! Thanks for this, I will watch out for it from somewhere warmer, hope we have clear skies.
 
Well, I do hope that some of you managed to get out and look up this week - the best night here was Wednesday 15th after 11.00pm as the sky cleared for several hours and gave a fantastic display that for several periods looked like fireworks with multiple shooting stars being visible at the same time including a couple of really big ones.

Keep watching the skies!
