Hi guys ,

Can anyone help my friend . She has a pony with EMS she’s not doing great and is having to be only worked in walk as a she’s got a leg injury. The vet put her on metformin again as she’s put weight on from reduced work. She stopped eating the powder in the feed she tried lots to hide it . The vet advice her to mix with water and syringe . The horse held it in her mouth and then developed blisters . So vet changed to 850mg tablets . The vet put 17 tablets twice a day the pony in question is a 14 hand native a little over weight so weighs about 430kg . She started the medication yesterday but only managed to get the pony to eat 8 last night , she has at least 8 this morning and 12 this evening. It’s been trail and error getting her to eat them . But she rang concerned as she said that her mare seems very subdued , doing a lot of wee’s but is drinking a lot . Does anyone else think the does is to high. She going to ring the vet first thing but will the mare be okay over night ? Tablets where given at 4 and it’s now nearly 8pm I said they should start wearing off soon . Any one else got any others on such a high does ?
Thanks

Metformin often does little. Lots of tablets is fairly normal with it.
Let your friend and her vet sort it out. A forum isn't going to know the vet's rationale.

Thanks but my friend is very concerned . She is speaking to her vet first thing . Vets make mistakes and all I was asking is if anyone else has a horse on the similar does

ring the emergency vet. They won’t mind being asked the question. Particularly if the ping is not herself.

If your friend is 'very concerned' and has given the pony the medication, I'm sorry but she should phone the vets now rather than posting online, or the nearest emergency vets if really worried.
