I did indeed have a Bit Fit Consultant out and I have to say it was the biggest waste of 60 quid I have ever spent!! And the super expensive bridle - more money, which is reposing in the to sell department!! For free - speak to the lovely and very helpful lady at Forelock and Load for bitting advice which you can do remotely. I would not at all recommend the Bit Fit Consultant I had - I have found my lads answer but through Forelock and Load and I am not sure the lady up the road who had the Bit Fit Consultant has found the recommendation has worked either - whether she is sticking with it or not I am not sure.
The Micklem is designed I think for long narrow shaped horses heads. I have cut down flash straps for the bit straps as the bit straps were too short for my short lipped lad. But the combination of the Micklem and the new bit makes life a lot easier for us!!
I would say it is definitely worth trying, I've noticed a big improvement in 2 horses that I have tried it on. It hasn't been an instant cure to all of our issues when asking for a contact but that's where the schooling comes in.. however they both definitely seem much more relaxed through their jaw and neck. They are a very popular bridle nowadays so perhaps there is someone in your area who could lend you one for a few days? There might even be some tack shops that will let you trial one before you buy it.. I am not sure but worth a look!
I noticed someone mentioning about finding the reason for the nose flick which may well help you get to the bottom of the problem, and no advice on here will ever be as good as a vets... but if you are sure that the reason is more behavioural/ habit then playing around with different bits/ bridle combinations may be your best option. Often trial and error is the best way to find out what suits your horse the best.. it just unfortunately takes time doing so!
My old boy loved his. He had started getting sore around the poll and was head tossing and mini tearing, wouldn’t do it in a head collar but couldn’t hack out in that long term so tried the Micklem and he was completely different.
I think there is something in that. Mine stretched a little so the noseband was looser and he actually preferred it done up a hole. Not tight, I don't like tight noseband but not flapping either. That does keep the bit stiller though
I didn't actually get mine to fix a problem other than he was difficult to fit. He is a tb but has an almost araby head, quite short with a very broad forehead and small muzzle. In a traditional bridle I had a full headpiece, cob cheekpieces, larger browband and no noseband fitted him properly, cob or full. They had Micklems half price at Sports Direct and it was that before I had to go down the custom made route.
Nope, my marks are always rubbish! But they'd be even worse if she was in a regular bridle! We don't "do" dressage. We only "do" it to get to the fun jumping bits.
If anyone is looking to buy an almost new Bit Fit Bridle in black in full - I have one that I will be selling when I get around to it - its probably been used twice - but has been dressed and softened. I think its the Saturn
