Micro chip what's your views would you get your horse done

Absolutely I would. In fact I have. Esp for a coloured horse or a mare (more attractive to thieves). A freezemark can be hidden with dye, but its a lot more drastic to remove a microchip, and the thieves wont know whether there is one or not.

My mare has both f/mark, microchip and her breed cold brands x2, she says she feels like a supermarket barcode!

I have one with a microchip but only cos it came with one otherwise I'm not sure I'd bother. The dog has one though

We have just had one of ours done, went to get the other one done as well and realised from her passport that she is actually microchipped and we didnt know! It is very discrete, Hattie (the one that we had done) only has a patch about one inch square of clipped hair under the mane where it was put in. I dont know what difference it would actually make but YO can honestly put up signs saying all microchipped. We felt that it was fairly cheap (lots of people at yard also got theirs done) and you never know, it might a) put people off and b) slightly raise chances of recovery if anything did happen!

Hiya,
We just had a heap at our yard done (presuming same vets are offering you it as have a 'deal' on at moment)Got our Glad done as thought well its one more thing to help trace her if stolen and for 17.50 (no call out fee as we had over 4 horses getting done)thought it was worth itOh then 11.50 if you want lifetime registration.
just saw a small lump they didn't shave hair at all.

I get all mine done.

It is not meant to deter thievs... but you stand a better chance of your horse being returned if it is stolen.

If a thief steals a horse... it usualy ends up as meat, no matter how good it is. If it is microchipped then it has a chance of being detected at the docks and a chance of being detected at the knackery as the horses are scanned incase they are stolen.

Also, if the police catch up with someone who is suspected of handling stolen horses they have no way of knowing if a horse is stolen if it is not microchipped. Freezebrands can be dyed over or branded over.

Mine are done, it actually came free from the breed society, as they're rare a breed. I'm also thinking of getting the yearling freeze marked as well.

My horse was microchipped when i bought him although i have done nothing about it- I dont know what i am supposed to do really- I mean i imagine he's still registered to his old owner but who would i contact to change that?
As for them being invisable yes they are and i am getting him Freezemarked aswell. Farmkey also do a horseshoe symbol freezemark now which is becoming recognized as meaning "back off burglars I am microchipped"!! or something along those lines. Its less intrusive for those owners that do not like a full freezemark.

hi we had all ours chipped and freezemarked last week did not care how much it cost as we have had on 3 different ocassions men and a woman taking photos in our fields when approached ran off so overkill or not i have done this to keep my boy safer

I have one who's freezemarked and the other is microchipped. The microchip was done when I got his passport as part of a deal at the vets. I think if someone is determined to nick your horse, then not much will stop them, but at least you have a chance of getting them back if they have some sort of security mark/device.

Mcrochips are almost pointless, I wouldn't bother. I have every animal Freezemark as it has been proven that it is the best theft deterrent.

the first pony i bought was micro chipped. it was never checked by the vets on our first routine call out for her. So i wonder what was the point of it really (apart from a previous reply regarding stolen horse ending up at the meat market) My pony could have been stolen but no one would have been any the wiser.

I got my new coloured mare microchipped when the vet came to do her teeth. I think there is a way they can be detected via satellite? I might be totally wrong but I remember being told you can pay for a service (i think its expensive) that can track the microchip. So if my horse got stolen I could use that I think.

As breeders of TBs, we don't have any choice - all of them have to be microchipped. It might not be a deterrent for thieves, but it can never be changed and if the said horse was to turn up at a horse sale, there are usually (or should be) people with scanners there to check for these chips. Also, if you're selling the horse on, you can't get away with any "fibs" about its age. Every racehorse that gets out of the horseboxes, automatically has the scanner put on them even before they're allowed into the racecourse stables to make sure its the right horse to the right passport.

Mines done, and I intend to get the micromark horseshoe from Farmkey too. I think its the best way to stop them being slaughtered following theft, as the slaughterhouses scan for microchips. Also horses shipped abroad are all scanned at the dock. Its so cheap why not have it done?
It may save your horses life if he is stolen and sold for meat, unlike the poor unfortunate lasses horse that was recently posted here.

We have all ours done as foals, apart from anything else it proves their passports match their microchips.
We used to breed alpacas and they are supposed to be microchipped. One male we bought was sold as a gelding and we bred from him, when we decided to sell him we asked the vet to microchip him first, to our amazement he proved done already, and the match gave us his breeder and his registration .
All his stock were then eligable for registration and worth a lot more money!
I think freezemarking is a personal choice, although I agree it's the best deterrant I just don't like them, so this is the next alternative.

I would always freezemark in preference to microchipping. A freezemarked horse who gets stolen has umpteen people watching out for him or her. It is a visible deterrent. Microchips can move, not many people check for them and there have been horror stories of people gouging them out of horses and other animals.

would you get your horse done.? is it a good idea? after all it's not visable is it.

Yep most definately. Had Thumper micro chipped a couple of weeks after I brought him home.

I think a microchip is an excellent idea, and look forward to when all horses have to have them. However I wouldn't count on it as a security measure - for that purpose freezemarking is much better.
