Microchip - is this swelling normal?

I had my new little girl (still nameless!) microchipped last Saturday. The vet who did it has done all of my horses before. This time there was tonnes of blood - absolutely saturated four lots of cotton wool and three tissues (you could wring it out!). The vet said this sometimes happens and he probably just nicked a blood vessel. Well, now there is a huge lump over the site (about the same size as an egg) and it doesn't seem to be going down at all. I spoke to a vet (not mine, he wasn't there) on the phone, and was told this is just down to bruising, but I am a bit worried as the lump is huge. Should I run her down to the vets to take a look, or am I being totally paranoid, and this is actually completely run of the mill?

I would not be happy because a bruise is not egg shaped. I would be concerned that she might decide to rub the area and cause more damage, so I would probably want it looked at.

I've not seen this in a horse but I've seen it several times in dogs when the vet has nicked a blood vessel. The bleed has been under and well as over the skin and the blood forms a lump or haematoma that can take some time to disappear. It will get reabsorbed over the next few months and is absolutely nothing to worry about unless it gets hot and inflammed which would suggest infection.

mums horse didnt bleed but had an egg sized lump for a good period of time afterwards and it would weep a bit if she worked hard. I didnt worry as it didnt appear infected and it settled down eventually.

if she bled quite alot then it's quite likely that when the hole got a scab over, there was still some bleeding inside, giving you a scary lump. If it weeps anything other than a very little clear stuff or watery blood, or has heat in it then I would have the vet out incase it has got infected. If it is just a lump, and no other symptoms then I would leave well alone. If it is a heamotoma then unfortunatly it will prob take a few weeks at least to go down.
