Microchip papers …. Rehomed dog

I have just rehomed a dog from a slightly chaotic situation. It is a gorgeous dog.
I have a good line of proof of purchase - receipts and messages - but when I mentioned paperwork, total blank, and I suspect they will never find either microchip or vaccination papers.
Can I re register the dog in my name based on the above, or do I have to have the correct paperwork to do it?
I don’t want to take the dog to the vet until it has settled, as it has had enough disruption in its life - but has anyone had a similar situation?
 
I asked my vet to check for the microchip number and they wrote it down for me. It was easy to find which company it was with and there was an online form to complete to change ownership. One of the questions was what the dogs name was, with multiple options to choose between. My clever son found that when we refreshed the page, one name was still the same, so it had to be that one. I think they may have written to the old owner, but we didn’t hear anything else and our details were registered as the owner.

It should probably be more difficult really 😏
 
We had similar, fostered a dog and later took her on permanently but previous owner was not friendly or accommodating so we had nothing to show for it. We did involve the vets as they had her noted as not owned by myself and during a previous emergency had insisted on speaking to the actual owner before operating so I needed that changed. They were great and called the owner themselves to resolve that aspect.

Specifically regarding the microchip the plan of action was for the vets to scan for the number and I'd then have to contact the chip company asking for the change, they too would then go to the owner for confirmation. As it panned out when the vets scanned it and added it to the box on their computer record it pinged up a confirmation of the entry - their software connects directly to the microchip database and that was the first time any owner had been logged to the chip so in the end not quite the rigmarole that I was expecting.

Short version of all the above - you cannot do anything until you have the chip number and know who issued it, good luck and well done for taking on the dog.
 
When I privately rehomed Jack explained I wanted to register him to us so they may be asked for permission by the chip company (as thats what we had to do to be added to Ginny's chip, the rescue had to approve us being added), applied to his microchip company and his old owners confirmed to them. It was a really quick process. I'll admit I didn't chase them for his vaccination papers as I then had some issues with them and I wanted to cut all contact but at 15 we weren't going to get anymore done so it didn't matter to us.
 
My son went through this with his rescue dog. Vet scanned for a chip and provided details of who to get in touch with. Chip registration company wrote to the old owner outlining that a new owner wished to take the dog, and I think there was a line in the letter which gave a deadline to the old owner, and if they didn't responded by then, it would be assumed that a change of owner was acceptable. Son now has the dog registered in his name.
 
You do need the chip number.

We had a devil of a time getting the cat transferred to us via Petlog even though we had her registered name. It turned that an errant extra space had been added at some point after the last letter of her name, so we kept getting an error message. It couldn't be sorted out on line but once we finally got someone to pick up the phone it did get sorted.

All you need is the chip number. If you speak to your vet, they may be amenable to you just popping by and having someone come outside and scan your dog with the chip reader outside. Anyone should be able to do it, from reception upwards. Go prepared to write down the number or photograph it on the screen of the reader - it only pops up for about 30 secs then clears itself.
Once you have the number you can type it into "Check a chip" online, which should give you the name of the company it's registered with.
 
I *think, because Cecil was chipped as a baby you need the number and then I got the breeder to sign into her account and transfer him to me, I tried myself as she gave me the details but it wanted her permission. I had no paperwork though. Same with his jab. I knew what he’d had and when but actually had to start him from scratch as it didn’t tie in with the brand my vet used or something. I certainly had no physical paper work though.
 
I haven’t read all of the comments here but I have recently had to do this for a dog we rehomed. we did get his chip scanned at the vets, but if you’d prefer to avoid the vets for now you can buy chip scanners from Amazon (and then return them!)

we inserted the chip in online and this told us the company the chip was registered with, we then went through their process to get him re registered to us.
we had some backwards and forward as we initially didn’t pass the ‘security questions’. We later discovered he was still register as ’pup 2’ rather than his name, and he’s 2! So his chip was very out of date.
