A lot of vets seem to use the petlog chips. If you call the petlog helpline they can tell you which database the chip is registered on, and the contact details for them. The company who holds the info can then send the registered name for the chip, a letter asking them to confirm they no longer have the animal in their possesion. At that point you should (once you pay the transfer fee) be issued with paperwork in your name.

Can you ask the previous owner as they should have given you a form along with the passport. failing that, as the others have said, the most likely Company will be petlog, so contact them.

Unfortunately there are about 7 different microchip systems in existance. However in the last year or so a national European standard for microchips has been agreed and comliant microchips can all be read by one single scanner.

You need to get the microchipp scanned to get the identity number of it. If your horse is passported then it should already be on the www.nedonline.co.uk national register of horses. You will be able to have your horses microchip number added to your horses record at nedonline. If your horse ever goes missing and is found and scanned then the police will check the nedonline database and be able to determine the contact details for you.
