ive been told my horse is "very nickable", im terrified, freezemark or microchip and does anyone know rough costs? does it cheapen the annual insurance fee? thanks for your time.

Freezemark is a visible deterrent, Microchip will only help AFTER your horse has been stolen (IF anyone actually scans the horse...)

I have both, microchip was there when I bought him, freezemark was done a few weeks ago and cost about £50. I don't get an insurance reduction but it is piece of mind.

Definitely freezemark rather than microchip, better deterrent. Agree that your horse is very nickable - he's absolutely gorgeous! - watch out if I am ever down in Sussex ...

You can choose to freezemark on shoulder or saddle area - better to put the mark in a coloured rather than white area so it does stand out.

Mine has both, as originally I had her chipped and then decided a more visible deterrant was required. Mine was done on her saddle area, as she has white shoulders, so if marked there it would have, had to have been a bald mark. Interestingly my friend had hers done behind the saddle flap, so is visble if she has a numnah, but hidden if she has a square cloth on under her saddle.

Freezemarks are visable but also changeable. My old pony has been freezemarked since he was 4 years old (now 19) and when I bought my new pony (in feb) I noticed the first thing the vet done when I got him vetted was to check for a microchip.

This I thought was great and then decided to get both of them Microchipped. I am still in two minds as to whether to getr teh new pony freezemarked as it is unsightly but is a good visable deterent.

You can also make sure you have a sign on your fencing and stable stating all horses are FReezemarked / Microchipped. I also mark my rugs.

THANK YOU EVERYONE I am going to be making some calls today and get this sorted. any other advice regarding my other post "cut legs" much appreciated. must work now

have a good day x AND THANK YOU FOR THE COMPLIMENTS ON MY BOY.

I had one of my horses freeze marked years ago and it was dreadful. My horse went nuts, it is certainly NOT pleasant for the horse at all! And the woman who did it cant have done it right because 1/2 of it isnt even visible......!!

Personally I would get them micro-chipped and then put up one of those signs somewhere obvious saying something like "thieves be warned - horses are micro-chipped"!
