Hi our foal is five days old today and the vet is coming tomorrow to draw his pic for registering him. The vet has advised that he can also microchip him at the same time. Is this ok to do so young? We have had the other horses microchipped without much of a reaction, just worried he maybe too young, or am i being soft???

im sure Willow was microchipped when she had her pics done. She was about 7 days old. Cant see it doing any harm and it will save you another call out when hes older

If you are charting him so young, (even TB foals are a bit older, usually at least a month old,) then do make sure you have gone over it with a fine tooth comb and found all the whorls and markings while it is quiet as sometimes some get missed and then when the coats have changed you find others and they have to be added at additional expense or even the coat colour can go completely different from expected. I'm sure your vet will do the markings before he chips as it can upset them, it is a blo***y big needle after all! It'll probably bleed a little bit so make sure flies aren't a problem to it afterwards and it might make it (don't know which it is, sorry!) a little wary of you for a time but they soon come round.
Good luck.

yes i think the vet knows he has a task ahead esp as he (nico) is coloured with a few spots on his white bits! will def get the chart done first Luckily there are not many flies in the field he is turned out in so shouldn't be a problem, thanks for the advice
