Good or bad idea?
its apparently in order to trace horses if theres a disease outbreak [ eg West Nile Fever] and medicine and drug traceability.
Given this i dont see why herds of natives eg NF should be allowed exemption. To do so wuld be very unfair on other breeders.

I agree with you Nuffield, its the ponies off Dartmoor and the new forest and the welsh hills that NEED this sort of thing, it would put a stop to the horrendous over breeding and low quality foals with no future. Good idea but the ones who need it will miss out!!!!!!!!!!!
Im not a fan of micro chipping ayway all ours are freeze marked, so many micro chipped horses still get stolen, its no deterrent.

the NF'S have voluntary micro chipping ATM.....I bought a newfie foal last october that was chipped....

as with the dartmoor and bodmin moor ponies, some of those are indeed feral in the true sense...at least the newfies are owned and their owners are accountable for their stock..a far cry from dartmoor and bodmin....

It is a very good idea BUT it should include every foal. It will be interesting to see if our traveller friends bother.

Completely agree - it is a waste of time (and money) unless all foals are done - will watch and wait on the traveller issue

Splendid idea and makes the whole passport thing much more workable. Every horse I've ever had, except the very first one, has been microchipped. . . . even the little NF (the microchip cost half as much as he did!!)

We had already some bat experiences in Belgium and Holland with microchipping in horses. Can one tel me how far the leglislation is in the UK? In the current European leglislation the transponder was never mentioned or imposed. Only in the new draft of the EC that will be ammended in april 2008 the transponder will be mentioned as a possible identification but there will be also room for alternative identifications.
At the moment the irisscan is coming in final stadium witch is a better, safer and cheaper device and we prefer this above the microchip with all of his problems. Take a look at the dutch website to see the problems
www.antichip.nl (with english explanations) and we in Belgium also have a complete file

what shocks me is how my horse was imported from belgium with false vetting cert & papers and sold when he was microchipped - that means no one checked for it or they turned a blind eye!!! thankfully i thought of it and have now got his true papers
