Done, but it's already a legal requirement where I live. Despite that there are still loads of people who don't bother with the licensing/chipping over here
My most recent experience of microchipping is that it is bloody useless as no sod ever updates their details.
We had a dog last week with a foreign chip - Spanish address, Spanish telephone number (out of service, though it was interesting trying to translate the message ). It was scanned again by the dog warden who found both the Spanish chip and a French one. Again invalid details. Poor dog was full of chips and it didn't help him any!
It is also the law where I live and in my breed it is highly unusual for pups not to be chipped for ID/registry purposes.
BC I was scanning for an event and the chip number in a dog came out wrong. Owner said in full view of judge 'oh, that's the wrong one, try down here'. I could have slapped him. Judge gave him a right rollocking. About four chips in the dog, he an imported/failed service dog!!!
It gives me the rage just a little bit. I seem to spend my life on the phone to Petlog, the dog warden and various mad cat ladies. I've done a lot of tongue biting these last few weeks.
If MM is reading I have already managed to dump a kitten on my mother.
Thanks for doing the survey guys, the answers are really interesting, sorry if it wasn't clear it was for pets, so dogs, cats etc not horses.
Blackcob, poor little doggy I have heard that a lot of people don't bother updating their details which is a bit pointless as surely the main reason is to trace the dog/owner.
Also interesting to hear that it's compulsory in NI but still doesn't work properly, I wonder if the government have any other plans to make it work better over here when it comes into effect?
HM, dunno if this is relevant but you can't compete in my sport/certain breed shows without a MCN/must tally to dog's ID papers. Used to be tattoos or MCN and a lot of dogs have both but the chips have pretty much replaced the tattoos.
The chipping in NI only became compulsory in April 2012 I think.
Thank you CC that's interesting to know re the breed shows and competing
Hopefully the compulsory chipping here in 2016 will help but I'm sure that a lot of owners just won't bother which is sad. I'm sure if the dog is bred for fighting or as a status symbol it won't have been vet checked as a pup and probably won't be taken to one if it gets ill. Once again it'll be the 'normal' dog owners that get penalised for having a well looked after pet
