Yes, but did they send it back because they did not recognise the number as one registered with them?

What I am suggesting is that you use the implanted chip and corresponding number and ask a UK database to register it. I don't know if that is possible.

I was thinking about the many dogs who are imported into the UK with foreign microchips, there must be some way of adding international microchips to a UK database.

If your dog's chip is not recognised on any of the UK databases (there are many), it might be worth contacting Pet Log or similar to see if they can register it.
