Hello
I bought my horse last summer and have just realised that although he is microchipped, I've not registered him as mine. He has an Irish Horse Register passport which has the microchip number on it, I have had this updated to show me as the owner.

OK - I have just spoken to the Irish vet who chipped him originally and he advised that as the passport is updated to my name if he were stolen and the chip found it would go back to the IHR who would confirm me as owner.

Has anyone else had experience with this situation, I just started thinking about it with all these stolen horse texts going around.

You do need to update your details with the microchip company. We took one in microchipped and i did it online realy simple. I just needed a code word. If you have the passport it should be with it or contact the previouse owner.

Who was that with Silver_Florin? We bought a mule a few months ago, we have updated his Passport but not his microchip. If I can do it on-line, I will do it soon!

I jut rang petlog and paid £15 to update it to my name for a year and then i have to pay £15 each year to keep it up to date not bad for my piece of mind!

My mare was microchipped when I got her, I paid £15 to update the details, but never had a reminder to pay that annually. My mum's dogs are chipped and she doesn't pay each year. I think its a bit of a cheek and you should only pay if you want to update details.

Agree with Reggie. I have to pay for my freezemarking to be kept up to date, however, I haven't updated my address with my microchip co. Something else to go on the to do list...don't think the pony is with petlog, but my cats are and I don't have to pay an annual fee for them, but then again haven't updated their address either. Opppsss

Maybe I'm getting really confused and i dont have to pay each year I'll give them a ring tommorrow! I'm having my other horse done on wednesday, having not had it done before is it a really big needle? And is there a recovery time/ big wound?

Hi the needle is on the big sde but having done my own horse it s not that bad most do not notice it. generally done in middle of crest on left hand side in the fatty bit. NO recovery tme is needed just a apple or carott and a cuddle....NO bg holes to worry about so do not panic...I have changed my horses mcrochip and only had to pay once so for sure would check on that...good luck on wednesday.
