Microchipping

My imported German Warmblood was chipped in German (apparently). They couldnt find it when he was vetted and now he is due for his jabs, they brought the better scanner and have told me that they could not find it, so he probably isnt chipped.

Does this mean that he was never chipped in the first place or could it have been lost/fallen out?

If anyone has any comments Id be thankful. They scanned both sides of his neck?

it may just have fallen/moved places but i would have thought they still would have found it with the scanner, even if it was half way down his leg

if you dont have any papers....its possible he wasnt microchipped to begin with

I do have all the papers and was wanting to ensure the chip was correct with the paperwork hummmm

Any scanner will indicate the presence of a chip, even if it is a different system and cannot actually read that chip (or at least that is my understanding of the situation). Chips have been known to travel down legs, or migrate out of muscles and have to be removed.

hi, chips can migrate and they can also fall out, however, if they fall out it is usually at the time of chipping (chip follows needle out of the hole in the skin). If they are going to migrate, it happens pretty soon after the chip was placed. so if the chip was checked, say a week, after it was implanted (and it should have been) then someone should have noted where he had migrated to. Not all scanners pick up all chips and as your horse was chipped in another country it may be that the scanners used by your vets do not pick up the chip in your horse. You need to ask your vets to find out. I assume you have the horse's chip number? You should be able to phone the chip company. It may be possible to call Petlog and they may well be able to help you. If they can't, they may be able to tell you the company who produced the chip. They can recognise the microchip company from the chip number. Hope this hellps you.
