When I went to let him out this morning he just sat and looked at me. When I crouched down to offer him food I got a very low, very quiet warning grumble from deep in his throat, with just a fluttering of a lip. So, erring on the side of cowardice and quite liking my being without after market holes, I withdrew quietly. He came out and after a wander around was quite happy for me to put a lead on. He's a big strong lad and when he planted himself by the back garden gate I decided it would be better to walk him down to the local vet to see if he had a chip.

The dog was a good lad to walk, even in this high wind, being reasonably polite, but having no idea what 'Sit' meant, so as he was happy to stand quietly I didn't push it.

Got to the vet. He stood quietly to have the reader scanned over his neck. The vet nurse lady was very good with him :).

There was a chip :D. The lady got the mobile numbers, but had no joy. I had overheard her say the name of the road, so took him that way on the way home. Walked all the way down one side of the road and whilst the dog was nicely relaxed he showed no recognition, so when I got to the bottom I rang the dog warden and he said he'd meet me at my house. As a last ditch attempt, I started walking back up the road. We'd gone about fifty feet when the dog walked through a garden gateway. First time he wagged his tail was when the woman answered the door. His eyes softened. He was home.

I've let the dog warden and the vet know that he's back where he belongs.

I love a happy ending, well done for taking him in. If the weather with you last night was anything like it was here it certainly wasn't a fit night for a dog to be out !

ohhhh thats so nice and well done you for making such proactive efforts.

NB when my terrier went a wandering and a lady rescued her and took her to a vets (where they scanned and found her chip) I took the lady a bottle of champers and some chocs and the vets got both dogs on their patient role.

Maybe lady will be grateful enough to get you a king size toblerone! :-)))

Old grizzled rotties are very sweet. I have a greying Doberman but my friend has several Rotties.

Thankies folks. He is a lovely lad. Would have been easy to give him a home . Very aloof, but behaved very well indeed :D

I think he must be a Rottie cross with something else reasonably big. Tall, broad shoulders and head, but slightly longer in the body than I'm used to seeing in Rotties. Very tan muzzle, all of it, apart from white across the front; tan legs from the knees and hocks down.

MM the weather here was atrocious last night. I drove home from near Northants, up the M1. It was, shall we say, interesting :rolleyes:

I don't think the lady will be doing anything :). She wasn't the birghtest button in the box, but the dog was pleased to see her, so that's all that counts. When she shouted up the stairs that he was home, with such a smile on her face and the dog looking settled :D :D :D. Plus, with an arff the size of mine I think membership of Weight Watchers would be more apt lol :D
