Micronised Linseed for Laminitics & Cushions?

Cushions sounds serious :-) cushings?,

I believe so but onlynas long as the pony is a poor doer (which most lami ponies aren't!) as linseed is mainly fed for weight gain,

Might want to post this in the vet section for expert advice?

Micronised linseed is perfectly fine for laminitics... just don't feed in excess. my 17hh boy gets a heaped mug a day (250g?)... the 11hh pony at my yard gets 100g a day...

It isn't just fed for weight gain... it is fed for it's omega oils which are great for hoof health, the gut, coat, skin and joints...

My mum calls it Cushions as well :D
I feed my cushings mare linseed, summer and winter, because otherwise she won't touch her feed! It's fab, and she most definitely isn't a poor doer!

LOL - sorry yes Cushings!!!!! its Friday and its been a very LONG week!

I was asking as im considering getting a sack for my two to help with their coats etc., but had heard it was o.k. for laminitics etc., my friend has 3 ponies all with laminitis and cushings, one of them is old who needs to put on some condition, we were looking at sharing a bag between us.

Micronised linseed is used to replace omega oils when grazing is restricted and in winter. Fine for horses with metabolic conditions ime. Obviously don't feed loads. lol

ps. It's great for skin and coats. I don't find it causes weight gain.

OP I'm glad you asked this question - I was going to post exactly the same thing today. I have two with cushings and one is very prone to footiness and laminitis. All the answers were really interesting and I think I may now try it out with the ponio that just has cushings - he's the older of the two and really could do with a bit of extra condition before the winter sets in. He's a fussy feeder at the best of times and I know that small, very nutritious feeds are the way to go with him, heaps of fibre in a bucket isn't going to do the job. So I like to give him a bucket feed and as much hay as he wants along with his grazing.

Hi

I started feeding my 17 year old cushings horse with micronised linseed from Charnwood Mill, excellent stuff he is also is a good doer so does not get much and he looks in fantastic condition with a very shiney coat. And like others have said it is good for joints etc etc. Def worth the £19 per sack which has lasted me 6 months :-) highly recommend

I feed it to my 12hh EMS pony with no problems, and to my sweet itch mare. They get about 50g a day at the moment. For him, this will be upped as the weather gets colder, as he's in his 20s, so is a poorer doer than he used to be.
