Micronised linseed meal - use by date?

Does micronised linseed deteriorate after milling? If so, does anyone know the best before period?

Our local shop has a couple of bags that have been kicking around their shop for a few months now. I want another bag, but not sure whether to ask for a fresh one to be ordered in?
 
It is stabilized but I don't know how long it lasts tbh. My bag doesn't have an expiry date on it. Perhaps give the manufacturer a ring?

It's Charnwood. And our bags don't have any dates on them either.

It's just I am sure I read somewhere once that it's only good for about 3 months. Not sure if that's from milling or when the sack is opened though.
 
Yes. I order mine from Gravenhorse feeds and each bag has a batch no. and best before date. The bags I had delivered last week have a best before date of May 2013.
 
Where in the south west are you spyda? I dont know any feed merchants around that stock big bags of linseed so would interested to know where you are. I have found a place that will order me in linseed but none that actually keep it in large bags.

I get mine from Mole Avon in Axminster. I used to ask them to order me in a bag when I needed it via their Store's and they'd get it in via Bones for me. Then suddenly they bought in x5 20kg sacks back in the summer and have had them sat in aisle of their store. They've a couple of these original 5 left and it's these ones I'm wondering if I want to buy :confused:

Hi

Most oil-based products are prone to becoming rancid. As I recall, Charnwood add anti-oxidants and mould inhibitors to give a 6 month shelf life at normal temperatures. Their bags aren't airtight, but opening and leaving the top open might permit faster oxidation of thee upper contents

Only problem I have with the Charnwood Milling linseed meal I buy is that the sacks don't have ANY dates printed on them. So how would I know if they are approaching their 6 month anniversary?
 
Further details gleaned on the subject of ML -

Regarding shelf life we find that the product is fairly stable as the oil is intracellular (reducing oxidation). We normally give Linseed a 5 month shelf life in the winter and 3 months in the summer. There will be some oxidation once the bag is opened, and I would expect with normal suggested feeding levels that a 20kg bag would last a 500kg horse for 3 months.

So, 3 month shelf life in summer and 5 months in winter. Think I'll ask for a fresh bag to be ordered in!
