I've got a 3/4 TB mare who is "sharp" and is on speedibeet, pure Alfalfa pellets, linseed and brewers yeast and looks and feels fab. A lot less "hot" with plenty of good energy and less fizzy than when she was on compound feeds.
Most of Allen and Page's non molassed range are mainly just oatfeed or wheatfeed and speedibeet. Wheatfeed is a by product, and other than a fibre source doesn't have much nutritional value! Obviously you're paying for the additonal bits they put into it, but you can do your own version for not much money. A majority of horses in work can cope well without needing the additional starch in compound feeds, as long as they are getting good protein levels to repair muscle, and a good vit and min supplement.
