Those of you who feed micronised linseed where do you buy and what brands? Thinking my TB could do with a bit of extra zuzz and see some good results when added to a good diet

I use Charnwoods which I get delivered from Equisupermarket. It'll be cheaper if you can find it locally, but I can't. I feed a mugful a day.

It's sold as micronised full fat linseed, but it's definitely Charnwoods, which is well regarded.

I bought some last week. Free delivery is now £30 and over. No worries I just bought 45 Stud Muffins as well!

I'm fortunate and have 2 local feed stores that stock it. I use Charnwoods though have just bought Burford, I had to ask one of the guys to reach a bag as they had a forklift in use and didn't realise until I got to the till. I've used it before, it's not as good as Charnwoods but I think my lot will eat it.

i buy equine omega, because it’s the cheapest brand on viovet🤣
At 34.99 it's more £5 than Charnwood delivered.

There are small differences. Charnwood uses their own trademarked process involving infrared, if you look in their site it's Micronized®, they've registered the process.

Others say cooked or micronised and may be processed differently. If you compare some of the specs, they are different, when I looked at Marriages, they had higher starch levels.

Just to confuse matters, Charnwood supply other people who repackage and run a micronising company ,http://www.micronizing.com/ so in some cases, you may be buying charnwood under a different name.

i got the 3kg one from viovet, which worked out cheaper by the kilo compared to all the others on there and the shops around me, and i was ordering other things from there so saved postage etc. incidentally she’s not getting it atm as she’s on box rest, so i’ve dropped anything that could make her pile on the pounds whilst she’s out of work haha.

will keep it all in mind if i go back to it though, very helpful thankyou!

It will always be cheaper to buy a big bag but not everyone has space and although it keeps reasonably well, it will go off if you don't use it all.

definitely, i thought about buying a big bag but with one horse, i definitely wouldn’t have got through it all before it went bad, especially when i was only feeding it for skin/coat and not for condition!

how long does it generally keep for? it’s in a sealed box atm if that makes a difference - 3kg bag fits perfectly in a regular 1/1.5kg supplement tub thankfully haha

I've seen some companies quote up to 6 months if kept cool and dark, micronising extends the life and it's more stable than oil but it will go rancid at some point.

I keep mine in a black plastic bin with a tightly fitted lid and it's fine for 3 months which is how long it takes me to use a bag when I'm only feeding for coat.

Any brand

Not in my opinion. Charnwoods or Charnwoods repackaged (eg simple systems linseed) is good.

Omega / marriages / Burfords own brands that are higher starch and sugar than Charnwoods aren’t as good and aren’t made in same way, so don’t preserve the delicate essential amino acids in the micronisation so are less useful.

I buy this - it's cold pressed, which apparently is an alternative to micronised? Bag lasts ages and pony loves it.
There's a good explanation here of the differences between oil and micronised and when you might want to feed one or the other.

Basically oil is good for calories and omegas, the whole seed adds protein and amino acids to the omega oils but fewer calories.

Same topic, but different question, I bought the 20kg Equine Omega Linseed meal 20kg bag (first time buyer of linseed) but wonder now if I went overboard. It made financial sense at the time, between the 3kg and 20kg bags but the amount added to feed each day is quite 'tiny' in comparison to the balancer, chaff etc I feed so am worried it will take 6 months to feed to one horse. I have it stored in a black bin with lid, but wonder, with the onset of summer, if the heat will have a negative affect on it? Does anyone have experience with this?

It should be ok in a closed bin, i feed 1/4 scoop twice a day
