Mid Feb 'will we ever see the sun again' Weekend Plans

Second simulator session at the palatial new set up at Racewood in Cheshire, my sessions being taken by a brilliant human physio. Other trainers are available. I’m getting back in the saddle after 7 months off with Covid/Long Covid then a knee injury. Both of my neds are retired so my ony training sessions for years have been on a simulator.

Last week I was simply happy to be able to mount and dismount without collapsing as soon as my left leg took any weight. This week the mounting/dismounting is fully sorted. However, can I sit centrally in the saddle 😳.

In the first still I am all over to the left in walk, but my body is telling me that I am straight. Liar. There’s even a moving red dot on the screen in front me telling me how off to the left I am.

After multiple sessions off the horse on the physio’s treatment table I am finally able to sit in the centre of the saddle without too much effort. She worked on my left glutes then my left lower back. Ow.

I’ve invested in one of the special tops she sells which shows up even to me just how crooked I can be 😳. It shows up Every Single Pound of the 16 that I still need to lose to get to my target riding weight 🤣.

Feeling and riding so much better at the end of the hour than at the start.

These lessons sound so fab! Love reading your reports on them. I started following the physio on Insta and the content is so interesting. It's about 3 hours drive away from me otherwise I'd be there for a session like a shot!

I felt flipping heroic yesterday! I don't do the spreadsheet job on a Wed and given I have sodden fields and sodden bridleways and no arena I hauled 1 to Cholsey for an hour of tiring him out on their hills, hand walked the wonky one for 45 mins then hacked the microcob. Plus mucking out all 3 and soaking more haynets than I want to count. It was grey, cold & miserable all day and I was basically running on coffee. Asleep on the sofa by 9.

The hooligan is joining a group ride at Cholsey on Sun. It's with the riding club and I'm hoping they won't be too sedate. He doesn't do sedate very well.
I think I've spent the whole week feeling heroic - its been so horrible with the weather and trying to keep on top of mucking out, soaking hay, busy job etc.

Arena hire on Friday with the hooligan who actually felt a bit tired. I was expecting silliness with him being in at night but judging by his coating of shavings I think he has a very, very good snooze! We now have a very consistent right canter, but I need to sharpen up those transitions out of cob trot.

The group hack with the riding club was a little more sedate than he usually enjoys but I was really impressed with his behaviour. Another lady had brought along her rising 5yo who hadn't been out in a group before and you wouldn't normally choose my boy as suitable company! He jogged to start with and was cross at being held back behind the youngster but once he'd had his first properly long trot settled nicely. We all had a bit of a horrible moment at the end when one of the veteran horses pulled up after a canter looking like his back legs were giving way. His owner was distraught and hopped off quickly - fortunately he walked out of it and when I messaged her last night she said he was fine when he got home. No idea if he'd tweaked something or had a minor tie-up but I did breath a huge sigh of relief when I heard he was OK.

Microcob has been hacked. I swear if that pony had been near a stallion I'd think we were getting a +1 any day soon but its just a hay belly and I'm hoping it vanishes before the vet has any reason to look at her again - very good doer

Sun is out today and apparently we have a warm spell due in from Wed which will be a welcome relief!

Screenshot_20250217-174018-243.pngwell I'm all tuckered out cantering and navigating the jungle tracks in 35 degrees even early in the morning nearly did me in. I was feeling a bit silly at our refreshment stop, should have booked the shorter ride but the shorter ones didn't have a drink stop so 6 to 1 I suppose. Only 2.5 hours of actual riding with a 30min visit to their main ranch to wee and drink all the water and juice and eat watermelon. The ponies got a wash and some turn out which was nice before heading back along the beach. Beautiful stables ... Nicer than most of the houses to be honest which felt a bit weird. All the horses at their own fans and deep clean beds, they get holiday for 3 months during the rainy season in herds in grass fields which the stables open onto. All the horses were stunning, fit with no lumps of bumps.

I then had to cancel out boat trip to go to the ED because I got a load of deet in my eye 🤦🫣

deet in the eye sounds particularly unpleasant.

I decided you can never have too many stormy photos. .

We did in fact see the sun today!

Most unhappy that Friday forecast is for "gusty winds". Deciding how much I want to commit to my 'one day I want to be the sort of rider not bothered by things like a windy day' or just go for another ground based lesson.

Well the universe has solved this one by bringing me a stinking cold this morning so I've cancelled my lesson altogether :(

I'm in Gloucester on Friday for my Areas @millitiger and the forecast is similar but slightly less rain. I'm hoping it gives sensible Sammy an advantage if flower pots are blowing around..!! (I've probably now jinxed myself and he'll decide to have a rare spooky day...).

Same here!
My boy lives out and is very weather proof. I'm hoping those lucky people with access to indoor arenas at home/livery, will have slightly shocked horses.
It was pretty windy at Solihull last spring when we qualified at Areas, so fingers crossed for both of us with our sensible horses.
Although mine has been a rocket this week, I've done too good a job of getting his energy to peak 😂

Also glad I have a stable booked for Thursday night so can travel down before it hits 🤞

Lol - I was thinking the same when I rode yesterday! I've spent the last six months learning how to get Sammy off-the-leg...yesterday I had to focus on slowing him down 🤣. Good luck with the travel and the Regionals. We're in the afternoon so driving through the wind...I've driven the same route in similar weather a few times and it's usually ok.

I don’t think summer is ever coming. It’s so cold.
Bit of an over busy one here. Single horse squad training up in the midlands with Rocky Saturday. Really useful sessions working on his straightness. Never trained with Leanne Wall before but will be looking out for her clinics now. Really good exercises for him, and 17yo established horses are not always the easiest to teach. Very nice to be starting to get sports horse Rocky back after a winter of pudgy pony Rocky.IMG_3063.jpegIMG_3064.jpeg
Then back to our local indoors for round 4/5 in the league. 2 really established dressage (prescision and paces indoors) tests for 90+ And 86%…! Maestro really drivable cones for a clear and just 1 down and some time for Storm as he took over a little on his bogey corner. Thoughtful (on my part!) schooling round for maestro who’s turning into an obstacles lover sealed his win and place at the national championships. Storm tried 110% round a super tight course to not give too much away and maintain his lead. He’s in joint 1st in the league so it all comes down to the final event…! Indoor driving really is good sport :)
