Mid ish May hot weekend plans

Turned out I had a really good completely unplanned outing yesterday. After I moaned about not having time to go anywhere I was feeling fed up and thought sod it I'll take the little one out from home. Did our first ever hack through the village, involving traffic, cricket matches, buggies, temporary road signs, children on scooters etc, and he was fab, for a first time. So I went from bleurgh to yayyyyyyyy completely unexpectedly.

Last time I tried to take him on the road on my own it didnt last long. It was the horrified look of the lady in the car whose bonnet he nearly sat on that finished me off 😱😂 World's our oyster now (well, we're getting there anyway)

Robbie was sound this morning 🥳 and then plaited him up and started doing studs and he has lost nails. Pulled the twisted one so no show! Oh well better he gets another day to be 100%

Yesterday, BF and I did a Parkrun, had a Thai massage and then went to the races (evening meet) followed by live music. Horses ate grass all day 🤣

Today, H had his second hunter trial. He is still not the bravest. Had a few grinding to a halts on his first round, a couple of jump from walks, then we did a second round and he took me, clear.

BF was a super groom, supporter, video man and driver home so I could have a gin in a tin!!!

I had a lovely in hand hack with my boy on Friday evening. It was stunning weather, and we went up the huge hill behind the yard and enjoyed the glorious views. He’s really gaining weight and fitness, and I’m hoping to be back on board in a couple of weeks.

Lots of scratches and a few treats because I was meant to be going on holiday yesterday. Unfortunately, this has been temporarily delayed due to a small issue with me having completely lost my passport. The bonus was that I got to go and take him out for an unexpected in hand hack today. It was too hot to be going up any giant hills, so we stuck to a fairly flat route. Had a lovely walk and blew away some cobwebs and anxiety.

So we didn't actually get to the clinic. But we have learned lots.
1) I like driving a 3.5t box and I'm fairly decent at it
2)D will go on and off the box safely
BUT
She looked so stressed when she was tied on the box that I couldn't bring myself to close the ramp. So we spent the morning eating apples and wandering up and down the ramp. I'm not sure I improved the situation she still looked tense AF on the box and I am quite disappointed. Not in not going to the clinic but in my lack of horsemanship 🫤IMG-20250518-WA0001.jpg

Rubbish, it sounds like you did fine horsemanship.

Rigs was on and off the box every day for 2 weeks before he travelled anywhere (and that was just round the block) as he too wasn't comfortable. He was fed in there, tacked up and untacked for riding in there... the box was like a tacking up area for every ride. He then did many trips in the village before going to a venue.

Sounds to me like your horsemanship was great!

I think I was rather over ambitious. Little and often needs to be the plan. She's brave and curious but a stressy wee thing.

But that's what I mean that your horsemanship was great. You had a plan, she wasn't ready for that, and you changed your plan to build her confidence. Great horsemanship!

You listened to your pony, realised she wasn't ready and didn't force the issue, but spent time making sure she was relaxed and had a good experience.

Sounds like b****y excellent horsemanship to me!

I went XC training with a friend. I remembered that XC is the best thing ever, Henry is a machine and I need to get out of his way and let him do it, and that while I seem to be VERY nervous SJ, XC is not the same and I was out there doing some quite big jumps (sensibly, because it's been a minute and we haven't jumped anything serious in some time!). I expected to stick to just little jumps but ended up happily jumping 80s and feeling like I could do more. I need to channel that feeling into my show jumping!

I don't think that's a lack of horsemanship at all.

With the powerful benefit of hindsight I would have done a lot of small journeys out and back with the Turbo Cob when he was a baby. He found it very difficult to balance travelling backwards and even more so when he was tired after a lesson or clinic. We got very "stuck" at one point and I had Michael Peace out who correctly pointed out that he could and would load easily enough but was protesting when he didn't feel like going on the lorry. Hindsight is a powerful thing and I did too much too quickly (the novelty of having transport!)

I ended up popping down to the local show yesterday, and came away with a 2nd and a 4th and the judge's comment that Blue would have done much better if she wasn't so fat. Which, sadly, is very true. However, I had to swap to a shorter girth yesterday, so we're definitely moving in the right direction.

I went to a Working Equitation clinic on Saturday with my baby horse, Ollie, well he is just 5 now but still green :) His first time ever in a group horse clinic setting and we have never done WE before, he was a superstar, happily over the wooden bridge, opening and closing the gates and the reversing type exercises, we even did the long Javelin spear the rings thing with a bullhead and managed it both in walk and trot. so proud of him
then Sunday a day out at Windsor Horse Show, can't believe I have never been there before , was a really fun day out.

It's been a torrid week. Mistakes have been made by me and stuff is bubbling under the surface which will hopefully resolve the issue. Meanwhile it's all about Robbie who has a viewing today and otherwise is off to combined training on Sunday for 90cm. I need to move him up to 1m so will try and do some clear round somewhere next week.
What happened in the end re. this? Just caught up on Tattle…

It's still ongoing but I have done as much as I can. I have put the vlog out now. I don't want it to impact @TheMule even if I don't ever appear again. Tbh right now I don't even feel like eventing. But that's my own fault isn't it. Anyway onwards we go.

Got my trailblazers qualifier with probably the worst test I've ridden in a long time. Not quite sure what went wrong because he warmed up nicely then got all stiff and behind my leg in the test. Our last centre line was shocking. I nearly went home after the test but wanted my sheet so was surprised when it came with a yellow frilly.

Judge picked up absolutely everything I felt & did badly so I assessed myself OK, but probably shouldn't assume all the glamorous dressage divas do a better job than my little cob.

But I do somehow need to work out how to persuade him to have a wee! This is the 2nd time he's gone dead to my leg only to follow up with the world's biggest wee once I've got off - with a massive look of relief on his face. Maybe tack up and then pop him back on the lorry briefly??

Well done and that could be worth trying.

I went to dressage last weekend, did an intro and a prelim. It’s only my second prelim with my horse who I’ve had a year but faced personal issues so haven’t had him out as much as he should have. He is a bit horse shy in warm ups so I started with intros so we didn’t have to canter if we didn’t want to. He doesn’t do anything nasty he literally just jumps when a horse comes toward him. I thought our intro was good but lacked forwardness and that was reflected with 68% in a high scoring class (winner got 71%) but in our prelim I forgot the test (haven’t done that in a while!) and picked up left canter TWICE on the right rein so had to correct. I came out thinking I’d get about 60% so was really pleased with 64% even with the mistakes.

This weekend we are off to a showjumping arena hire. I’ve had a lot of showjumping lessons now but not been out yet, but his old owner has reassured me he’s never cared about fillers and if you tell him to go he will!
