We have had a nightmare with 3 of our dogs and ear infections. 2 lost their ear drums and one has permanent reduced hearing in that ear. What do you need to know?

Yep, mine has an infection now. Took him straight to the vets and got Easotic suspension and 3 days later, the ear is no longer inflamed and he's a happy waggy-tailed one again.

We had to take ours to a specialist dermatologist in the end, she got them sorted quite quickly. All alllergy related but months of using the wrong antibiotics had made them resistant to just about everything. We had to get a specialist one from the ICU of the local hospital for one dog. Cost a fortune, thank goodness they are insured. The worst one is now on a vaccine and (fingers crossed) no infection for 12 months.

Sometimes oral antibiotics required too. Swabs will confirm which bug you are dealing with. Pseudomanas is a particularly nasty one to get rid of. My vet always prescribes some pain relief too for ears. They can be very sore. Good luck.

Yes, my young lad (GSD) used to get them quite intermittently. He'd cry while trying to scratch his ear, poor lad; and the ear would be full of gunk. Most of the time I'd try to treat with ear drops but the worst one we had to get antibiotics for.

We put him on gluten free food for botty-related reasons, and he's never had an ear infection since. There does seem to be some evidence that gluten intolerance can cause ear infections, might be worth a read?

As an aside, we took him to Centerparcs and he had to sleep in our room, and he decided on the first night that he didn't like holidays, and started riffing his ear and crying at about 3am. I was worried sick, thought it would be another infection, and an expensive holiday vet visit. I got up and gave him a cuddle, and the next morning he was right as rain which leads me to conclude that on this occasion he was in fact faking it.
