Midges in February?

Anyone else got midges already? 😩 those last few mild days seem to have brought them out and there were clouds of them on the field this afternoon. 😔 just having a moan really.

Had enough of winter but spring just leads to more problems….
 
Ohhh don’t you dare say the M word…it’s far too early!

We generally get them in may here. Thats why the only month i really love is april - its warmer, longer light days, milder nights and NO biting insects!
Then from may until november, its ‘vampire season’!
 
None thankfully - where my boys are we are quite lucky that we don't really have an issue with midges (I've totally jinxed myself now haven't I!), however I lost the battle with the muck heap this morning and ended up kneeling down in it, like I was doing some sort of weird worship to it - oh how my friend laughed with glee....till she did the exact same thing - we must have looked proper mad laughing like hyenas at the muck heap at each other 🤣

I know, I have one that has bad sweetitch and she is halfway through her course of vaccinations but it was actually the big friesian that was covered today - we do have water quite near
the field but unfortunately that is the best and flattest field for the horses and having one that can’t go on the hill now after having injury I don’t know how we are going to get on this summer…. stocking up on every fly rug, nudge lotion and fly spray going I think!
 
Passed through a cloud on the road last Saturday. It was a lovely evening! And that kinda ruined it tbh!

Yet to see any round the yard but SI rug is going back on anyway.
 
Baby talcum powder worked on her udder region last year against midges. They are easily dried out and die in dry powder so it reduces them landing on their nether regions in droves, causing extreme itchiness.
My mare has quite sensitive skin to many sprays, but the talc is fairly non-chemical and she was fine with it. I even put it on her ‘arm pits’ as midges love their body high heat spots.

I haven't tried this. Do you use a specific make and how often do you apply it? I've started using a cream on my pony's mane but it makes him so greasy.

Applied it each morning before going out in the fields - then some days re-applied at end of day (they come into yard every night all year)if midges on yard are bad. Theyre only bad on yard during the 3 or 4 separate weeks of peak hatching times….depending on weather, moreso if a wet summer.

The talc is good in the summer too for sheath/udder/armpits as it prevents any chafing and less sweat on warmer days. My black mare feels the heat more, and can be sticky skinned on belly /udder regions.
She lets me apply it, without any resistance or walking off (she’s fussy with some funky smelling sprays/gels usually! ) so it must feel nice for the skin and i notice she’s far less itchy.
