My shelter has come alive with midges over the last few days
Clouds outside & they're all pitching up in the eves & between the planks - literally everywhere flying & crawling!
Is there anything I can spray on the wood that they wont like to deter them?! 😬

Midges won’t generally go into dark shelters - my horses stay in the back dark part of the barn as the midges fly about the entrance. Its a deep barn so there’s darkness in there compared to outside.

I’ve used sticky flytraps up around the top door, away from horse access, and even smeared cheap hand/body lotion cream onto the entrances, away from horse reach (our barn is high entrance where midges fly up there) That catches a fair few.
I’ve sprayed the lower horse access parts with horse fly spray to deter them.

Midges are early this year here - started April 1st - usually they’re here May 1st. We’ve lost our 1 ‘golden month’ of the year that is fairly warm without biting insects due to early midges this year 😐

Please dont use sticky traps. Ive seen birds stuck on them. Infact probably the best thing to do is leave well alone and when the swallows arrive they will gobble them up.

The midges have been awful this year. This is the first year in about 15 that my sweet-itch horse has rubbed his tail and I'm fuming with myself, I've always kept on top of his sweet-itch 100% but got caught out with how early the midges arrived.
