Midges!?!

Ellie is being driven crazy this morning by midges! At first I wondered if they were hanging around the farm because of the pong, but I went out for a ride and the little buggers were everywhere! Used fly spray for the first time this year, but didnt make any difference. Poor Elz is actually happier in the field today! Anyone else noticed how warm it is today?

Ah yes! I'm in Hampshirrrrrrrre and have been having the 'midge problem' for about a week. It is horrendous and there are just absolute swarms of them. Really really horrible. Anyone got any recommendations are to some REALLY good fly spray?

Midges already!!!.

we'r up in the highlands so haven't seen any yet, but when we do, they are normally mutant sabre toothed midges' not as bad as the west coast ones though.

i feed garlic daily all year round, but increase slightly in the summer months.
My fly repellant is this one, it's got avacado in it and smells lush, conditions the coat and seems to work!.

I have also heard that feeding marmite works really well for people and humans.

Avons skin so soft moisturiser is the best stuff for people. It really really works, although haven't actually tried this on hoss as yet.

I have to recommend the Avon spray (think it was the aloe vera one). We used to live on the English/Scottish border and were plagued by Scottish Midges. You would be out just to check on them for 10 minutes and would literally have about 10-15 bites! Bought all sorts of horse repellents and the only thing that really worked was the Avon one for people. For the horses we did actually buy a 'cattle' fly repellent which tends to be stronger, you can get them from the farmers shops, and I think WCF does them. That works much much better than the nancy horsey stuff. Two of ours were TBx with pretty thin skin and we had no adverse reactions to it at all. A lot of it is playing around with what is out there and seeing what works. I'd also recommend feeding garlic.

Gah! arrrrrrgh! *waves arms around head frantically at the very thought of the little b*gg**s

NOTHING seems to work. I coat myself in avon skin so soft spray oil (the green one) but we've tried cattle stuff, stuff from the states that's ingredients are probably black-listed here, a gas powered midge-eater, high % DEET sprays, natural stuff, home made stufff.... tend to find the stronger harsher are better but had to buy sweet itch rugs times 3 last year as the poor poor boys whilst not alergic, were constantly being harassed.

I personally will be walking around all summer with a can of fly killer spray for the house permanently in my hand!

its going to be a really bad summer for flies because the last summer/winter encouraged them and didn't kill the little blighters.

We wait all winter for nice weather in the summer and then the midges descend and make us wish for cold winter again!!

*rah rah rah rant rant rant...*

We had midges at he begining of feb, I couldnt beleive it, I was too late getting my girls fly mask on she got bitten realy badly on her forehead. We had a reprieve when it got cold towards the end of Feb and when it was windy, no doubt the blighters will be out today.

I use 'No Bother'!! It's specially formulated in Lochgilphead, Highlands for the pesky midges. It is totally natural, smells delicious, makes horses lovely and shiny and works brilliantly.
I think it is usually just sold locally but i'm sure they would send some. Try googling them

Thank god we don't have any yet!!
Good luck

I'm on the Wilts/Berks border & they were bloody awful here this morning! Jim, who gets mild sweetitch, was frantic to get in & hasn't shown any wish to go back out all day. Little Un is in keeping him company & I'll put them both out tonight with some hay. I'll also be putting Jim's SI rug on under his NZ & lots of barrier cream on his face & sheath. Tha blasted things just get earlier every year, soon we won't have any break from them

I use the itch stop salve from Nettex, the little bastards hate it, I put it on his ears and round his eyes and forehead, and anywhere else needed, we started with them yesterday, right pain.
